Ruby Aline Sullivan

January 6, 1950 - October 7, 2021 Ruby Aline (Grimes) Sullivan, 71, of Riverside, CA, passed away peacefully in her home on October 7, 2021. Ruby was born January 6, 1950, in the Orcutt area of Santa Maria, California to Gerald Eugene Grimes and Beatrice Susan (Ohler) Grimes. She was named after her grandmother Ruby Mae (Keenan) Grimes. After living in several locations, they settled in Riverside, where she graduated from Rubidoux High School in 1968 and then attended Riverside Community College. She married (Walter) Mike Sullivan in 1971, and they had two sons. In 1982 she married Tom Handgis, and they had twin boys. Ruby was actively involved in the community, coaching Little League baseball, serving as Jefferson Elementary and Chemawa Middle School PTA presidents, Arlington Little League President, and Arlington High School Baseball Booster president. She organized a City Council debate and volunteered her home as a polling place. She was employed part time at the Teamsters Union Local 467 and RUSD. She became a UPS driver in 1991 and was forced into early retirement due to health problems, including a stroke in 2001. Her other interests included a love for animals (especially her cats), reading, word games, watching baseball, football and horse racing, and spending time with family. Ruby is survived by her cat, Lucas, 4 sons, Michael, Jeremy, Tim and Tom, and 7 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michael, Will, Evie, Lacey, Dean, and Austin. She is also survived by her half-sisters, Nola Kent Moore of Marysville and Margaret Gaye Hale of Santa Maria, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Beatrice Grimes, brother Danny Grimes, and half-brother Nicholas Donaldson. A memorial will be held in her honor for immediate family and friends.
