David Mitchell Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of our husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, David Frost Mitchell, age 93. With his dear wife tending to him, David passed peacefully in his sleep at Bellaview Assisted Living Facility on Monday, March 16, 2026.

David was born in Spanish Fork, Utah, to Frost Mitchell and Myrtle Bernice Holt on March 12, 1933. As a lover of the outdoors and adventure, he enjoyed hunting and camping and cherished his time at his grandpa's ranch in Birdseye, Utah.

David faithfully served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oslo, Norway, from 1953 to 1956. Shortly after returning home, he enlisted in the United States Army in October 1956. While home on leave for Christmas, he married his sweetheart, Judy Wood, on January 3, 1957, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were stationed together in Darmstadt, Germany, where they welcomed the first of their ten children.

David had a strong work ethic and was dedicated to providing for his family. In Judy and David's early married life, he began work at Ironton in Springville, Utah, until a serious accident in which his hand was crushed by a crane. Despite the permanent damage to his hand, David demonstrated resilience as he continued working at the Trojan Powder Company while pursuing his education. He later graduated from Brigham Young University in 1971, where he studied both English and German.

David used his degree to teach English and German at Preston High School, in Preston, Idaho, where he instilled in many students a love of language until his retirement in 1998. While teaching, he also started and ran his own business, Mitchell Lock and Key. After retiring from teaching, he continued working at the school district as the Superintendent of Maintenance. He ran his locksmith business until he was around 80 years old.

His children will remember David as a hardworking, loving father full of jokes and witty rhymes. His grandchildren will remember a tender, playful grandfather, carrying the scent of his key shop and a mischievous habit of slipping them a Fig Newton before dinner when Grandma wasn't looking.

David is survived by the love of his life, Judy; his children Ruth Smith, Daniel Mitchell (Sunisa), Michael Mitchell (Irene), Elizabeth Rawlings (David), Rebecca Durrant, Rachel Townsend (Jason), Samuel Mitchell (Dee), Julia Peel (Nathan) and Judy Ludlow (Daniel); his siblings Douglas Mitchell and Peggy Cragun (Paul); 27 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frost and Bernice Mitchell; his siblings Joan North, Paul Mitchell, and June Mitchell; his daughter Maryann Bryant; and his grandchild Sarah Graham.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at the Preston First Ward LDS Chapel located at 213 South 200 East, Preston, Idaho. There will be a viewing preceding the funeral service from 10-11:30 am. Interment will be in the Preston Idaho Cemetery. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at webbmortuary.com.

Funeral services will be streamed live and can be viewed on Saturday, March 28, 2206 at 12:00 p.m.(MDST) by clicking on the link in his obituary at webbmortuary.com

David leaves behind a legacy of hard work, quiet strength, perseverance, faith, and a lifelong love of learning, along with a deep love for those dear to him, whether near or far. We love you always. Until we meet again.
