JAMES WOOD Obituary

On Monday, October 24, 2016, Jesus said, "Come Unto Me and Rest." James Milton Wood Sr., a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, answered the call and slipped away to be with the Lord.
James was born on May 29, 1940, to the late John Mark Wood and Virginia Mae Adkins Wood in Greensville County, VA. He attended and graduated from Greensville County Public Schools.
Growing up, James attended Oak Grove Baptist Church in Emporia, VA. At the time of his death, he was a member of Liberty Chapel in Fort Lee, VA. He loved his church family.
After graduation, James enlisted in the United States Army in 1958 where he had a distinguished career for 26 years. He excelled in a number of supervisory positions specializing in postal operations. James received several medals, including the Bronze Star Medal and The National Defense Service Medal. His tours of duty included Vietnam, Korea, Germany, Thailand and several other duty stations throughout the United States. After retiring from the military, James worked at FedEx for more than 17 years.
In 1960, James married his sweetheart, Dorothy Elizabeth Tennessee (Lizzie). This union was blessed with five children.
James embodied the Fruits of the Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Forbearance, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. While illustrating these traits, James modeled the walk of a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. James was a generous man full of wisdom, who will be truly missed.
His brother, Lawrence Wood, preceded him in death.
To know him was to love him as James knew no strangers. James leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife of 56 years, Dorothy Elizabeth Wood; five children, Anita Powell (Bernard) of North Chesterfield, VA, Zoe Day (Earl) of Charlottesville, VA, Wanda Wood of Henrico, VA, Valencia Corbett (John) of Chester, VA, and James Wood Jr. of Petersburg, VA; seven grandchildren, Niki Kidd, Priscilla Manns, Jonathan Corbett, Jazz Corbett, Nicholas Powell, Zhane Wood and Asha Wood; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Constance Bowman and Eloyce Wood, both of Clinton, MD; two brothers-in-law, Thaddeus Tennessee (Lillie) and Wilbert Tennessee, both of Richmond, VA; a sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Roney of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services for Mr. James M. Wood Sr. will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 2016, at Fort Lee Memorial Chapel, Building 10600, 1901 Sisisky Boulevard, Fort Lee, Va., Chaplain Oyedeji Idowu, officiating. Interment to follow at Southlawn Memorial Park.
A wake will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, October 28, 2016, at the funeral establishment.
