Joseph W. Gholson

Retired Master Sgt. Joseph W. Gholson of Chester, departed this life on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Medical Center, Richmond.

God blessed the late Henry and Elizabeth Lundy Gholson with Joseph Washington Gholson on April 26, 1925, in McKenney. The family relocated to South Hampton, N.Y. Later, the family moved to Hempstead, N.Y., where he received his formal education. Joseph confessed Christ at an age.

Joseph enlisted in the United States Army serving from January 1949 until he was honorable discharged in May 1969. Upon his reenlistment, he received four Bronze Service Stars for his service in Vietnam and the Army Commendation Medal. Joseph later worked for the United States Postal Service until his retirement.

Joseph leaves behind: his son, Joseph T. Gholson; daughter, Adrienne M. Langley; son, Kimm A. Gholson, who preceded him in death; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, James Gholson; one sister, Florence Rose Crain; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives; and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at the Albert G. Horton Jr., Memorial Veteran Cemetery, Suffolk, with the Rev. Dr. Herman Lundy, officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, and will assemble there at 11:30 a.m. on the day of the service for the procession to the place of service.
