MILDRED CALDWELL Obituary

Beautiful, sweet, kind, fashionista, entrepreneur, energetic, funny, encourager, resilient, incredible, woman of faith …
These are just a few words that come to mind when we think about our loving mother, Reverend Mildred Theresa Caldwell, born May 4, 1929, to John and Emily Merritt. Rev. Theresa, the youngest of seven siblings, James, Willie, John, Doris, Ethel and Sue were born and raised in Petersburg (Blandford Ward), VA.
She completed her early education in the Petersburg School System, graduating from Peabody High School, Class of 1946. On an evening out with friends, she met one handsome young man, a soldier, playing the bass fiddle with his band. To have her tell this story, she knew he was the one for her. On February 28, 1948, Rev. Theresa married the love of her life, Dr. Worsham N. Caldwell, to this union of 63 years, they were blessed with six children.
Rev. Theresa continued her education receiving her BA in Sociology and MA in Education from Virginia State College (University). She retired from the Petersburg School System after 30 years of dedicated service. Everyone who wanted to graduate during her tenure had to pass her Government and History class. She was fondly loved by her students who made learning a true joy. After her retirement, Rev. Theresa decided to venture into one of her many passions, fashion and style. In 1989, she received her cosmetology license and opened Impressions by Theresa Hair Salon.
Rev. Theresa loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with all of her heart. It was no surprise when she accepted the calling into the ministry and was ordained in 1993, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Luther M. Hill. Since this time, she has actively served as one of the associate ministers at Greater Faith A.M.E. Zion Church. Additionally, she served in the VSU Campus Ministry, Prison Ministry, the Home Missions Board of Petersburg, VA, and Sunday School teacher. Rev. Theresa was the founder and president of the Women of Greater Vision Church Auxiliary, which focused on scholarship and educational advancement.
Rev. Theresa was a member of the Petersburg Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and the Wives of Beaux-Twenty, where she was actively involved in sponsoring the annual Debutante Cotillion for many years.
Reverend Theresa was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dr. Worsham Norris Caldwell; son, Worsham Norris Caldwell Jr.; daughter, Emily Lynne; her brothers, Willie Merritt, James Merritt; and sisters, Doris Washington and Ethel Williams.
To cherish her memory, Rev. Theresa is survived by her three loving sons, Bradford Merritt Caldwell (Cheryl) of Manassas, VA, Mark Austin Caldwell (Cynthia) of South Chesterfield, VA, and John Stewart Caldwell (Robin), of Chester, VA; devoted daughter, Debra Sue Caldwell Morgan of South Chesterfield, VA; loving daughter-in-law, Leslie Jefferson Caldwell of St. Louis, MO and son-in-law, Jerome D. Morgan of Hyattsville, MD; her dearest sister, Sue T. Richardson of Petersburg, VA; brother, John Merritt of New York, NY; grandchildren, Jerome Norris Morgan (Tenika) of Atlanta, GA, Worsham "CJ" Norris Caldwell III (Jessica) of St. Louis, MO, Teresa Lynne Morgan of Hyattsville, MD; Dr. Whitney Neal Caldwell of Washington, DC, Bradford Merritt Caldwell II of Manassas, VA, Brian Wyatt Caldwell Esq. of Manassas, VA, Brittany Christina Caldwell of Alexandria, VA, Addison Emille Caldwell of Chester, VA; one great-granddaughter, Sydney Lynne Morgan; special friends, Stella Johnson and Francis Lucus; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, too numerous to name throughout the United States.

TO DEBRA AND FAMILY. PLEASE KNOW THAT THIS MESSAGE IS LATE but comes from the "HEART". We have not spoken since we were last together. But know that our hearts, love and prayers have been with you. Please know that you are missing an Angel that had retired from her position here on Earth and now has joined the Heavenly Angels up there with our Heavenly Father. Her job with HIM will be a bit different than here, but she will be looking down over you and the family with love and tears (yes, tears of joy)seeing how well all her babies are giving those instructions and has fared from her hard work. Just remembering my older sister and how much she loved Ms.Caldwell. Just hearing her speak was much of an inspiration to me. PLEASE know that My family, friends and I are here for you, if just to be your sounding board.
But remember:

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

your friend and sister in CHRIST.

To the Caldwell Family,

My sincere condolences on the loss of your beautiful and most kind mother. She was my Government Teacher at a Petersburg, High School. She took to me because my maiden name was Merritt and gave me my first Baby Shower at school. I will always cherish her wonderful act of kindness to assist a future teen mother, she did not look down on me, but lifted me up and encouraged me. As a result, I completed High School, College and received my Master's Degree as well as became a loving sister Soror in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. I will forever cherish your mother! May God bring you comfort during this time of bereavement,

My heart is truly heavy. I loved Mrs. Caldwell very much, not only was she one of my Petersburg High School government instructors, but she was my wedding directress, and soror. Mrs. Caldwell actually pinned me the night I crossed over. And yes, she was a very elegant as well as gracious woman.
I grew up around the Caldwells and always enjoyed spending time at the family home. To Brad, Deborah and all of the family, my sincerest condolences to you. Please know that you are in my thoughts, heart and prayers.

I just received the news through my sister Vicki and I sighed with sadness because a dear sweet woman, who gave me dear sweet memories is no longer in the earth. Then, I rejoiced because she's with her daughter and they must be so happy, so excited to be rejoined together, with the King of Kings! Take your rest from this life and we, in Christ will see you in the day of resurrection with our glorified bodies. Thank you Lord for dear sweet Mrs. Caldwell.

(Caldwell Family) Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming (Matthew 24:42). "Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming" (Matthew 25:13). The Son of man is coming for His Church at the Rapture - those not prepared will be left out of the celebration.
I know well there is no comfort for this pain of parting: the wound always remains, but one learns to bear the pain, and learns to think God for what He gave, for the beautiful memories of the past, and the yet more beautiful hope for the future. Be Bless.

Rev. Theresa Caldwell: friend of the family, high school teacher, Minister.

I have known the Rev. Caldwell since I was a little boy as she remained a friend of the family. Her older children were my playmates. She was a woman of great character, a wonderful wife and mother and always had something nice and funny to laugh about. She knew and loved everyone.
As my high school history teacher she was the best. She was smart and her class was exciting. She would always make us laugh and would give the best advice for overcoming problems.
When she received her call to the Ministry, she gave her life to God and loved the church.
The Rev Theresa Caldwell will be missed by many. To her children Deborah Sue, Brad, Mark and family you are in my prayers during this time of grief.
Prayerfully yours,
Wayne McKinnon and family
