George Barker Obituary

BARKER, GEORGE PHILIP

died suddenly September 25, 2010 in Westminster Vermont while splitting wood. He was born on December 15, 1944 in Providence to William Kenyon Barker and Ethel Sherring Barker.

He attended schools in Warwick where he graduated from Pilgrim High School 1963. He served honorably in the US Army for three years in Vietnam.

He was a proud member of the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers, working as a Corrections Officer for more than twenty years. He retired in 2007 and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement.

A great joy in his life were the auto races at Seekonk Speedway where he had many treasured friendships.

He was a devoted student, accomplished practitioner and talented instructor at the Ki Do Ryu School of Jiu Jitsu for more than twenty five years, where he will be greatly missed. He earned a multitude of esteemed Martial Arts honors and affiliations of which he was rightfully proud. He was a member of the Kyudan Federation of America, ranked in Al-go Ryu Jiu Jitsu and a lifetime member of the Kodokan Federation. He was very active in volunteering his time teaching self defense and awareness classes for women at Providence College and Brown University.

He was predeceased by his beloved son Michael, and is survived by his loving son Matthew Peter Barker of Providence, and many, many dear friends. His brother Kenneth lives in Rhode Island and his brother Herbert lives in Florida.

A memorial service celebrating George's life will be held at Carpenter Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick on Monday October 4th at 7pm. Visitation will be from 6-7 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the March of Dimes Foundation Rhode Island Chapter 220 West Exchange St. Suite 003 Providence, RI 02903. Information and condolences at
