Thomas Tierney Obituary

TIERNEY, THOMAS F., 94, of Sachem St., a retired teacher, died Saturday at Emerald Bay Manor, Cumberland. Born in Providence on November 26, 1910, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Rose A. (Giblin) Tierney. He was a lifelong resident of Pawtucket.

He attended Peace St. Grammar School until January 1924, and was a graduate of St. Raphael Academy, June 1928. He received his A.B. from Providence College in June, 1932 and his A.M. from Brown University Graduate School in October 1944. He taught at Jenks Junior High School from 1935-1952 and later at Tolman Senior High School from 1952-1978. He was Chairman of the Foreign Language Department of Tolman Senior High School from 1966-1978.

He was a longtime communicant of St. Leo the Great Church, Pawtucket. He was a founder and first president of the St. Raphael Academy Alumni Association, a member of the Pawtucket, Teachers Alliance, AFL Local 930, Music Director of The Mastersingers 1942-1948, member of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, American Classical League, Classical Association of New England, The Vergilian Society, and the American Association of Teachers of German.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. from the Cheetham Mortuary, Inc., 1012 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Leo The Great Church, 697 Central Ave., Pawtucket. Burial will be in Mt. St. Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket.

Calling hours are respectfully omitted. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made to the Providence College Loyalty Fund, 549 River Avenue, Providence, RI 02918 in Mr. Tierney's memory.

So very sorry that my favorite teacher is gone. I became a teacher and hopefully was as influential to others as he was to me. He was the epitome of distinguished character.
