Gordon Decker Obituary

Chief Master Sergeant Gordon Blaine Decker Jr., retired, passed away on July 8, 2025, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina, at the age of 60.
Born July 10, 1964, in Ashtabula, Ohio, he really called Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, his home and Pittsburgh Steelers his favorite sport team.
Gordon dedicated his life to service. He embarked on a distinguished military career that spanned more than two decades in the United States Air Force across various commands and responsibilities, here in the USA and around the world. In 2010, after 24 years of honorable service, he retired to Goldsboro, North Carolina - a community he chose to call his new home.
Gordon's legacy is etched not only in his military accomplishments but also in the lives of those who served alongside him and those who knew him beyond the uniform. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and honor to the nation he so faithfully served.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 22 years, Sonia; his sisters, Linda Frederick and Brenda Jacobs; and his brother, Jeff Decker.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon Decker Sr. and Marie Decker, and by his sister, Melody Bush, and brother Marty Decker.

Played several years of Summer rec Pony league baseball for Mary A Wilson with Goob and his brother Marty. He had a gold glove that caught everything and loved to joke around.

So sorry for this loss. Gordon was a friend I rode to DBC with after high school. May God comfort your family during this time.

What a sensational man he must have been. I never knew him but my family have always supported the military. My heart goes out to the folks who are grieving. Remember that he lived a life full of what he wanted to do. God bless all y'all.

We were innocent 6th graders at Mary A Wilson school. "Goober" was my sweetheart that year. I remember us playing Spin the Bottle at a friend's birthday party, and riding the little train around Kennywood Park on our class field trip and sitting beside him, holding hands shyly. I'll always remember the one song that was playing on the speakers, Silly Love Songs, by Paul McCartney. Goober was singing along, we both were. Haha Such sweet and innocent memories. Goober was always a fun, kind and sweet friend throughout Jr and Sr high school.
Thank you for your distinguished service to our country. May you rest eternally in peace.

So many fond memories from from high school and beyond. I called him Goobs, a great friend I admired and shared many experiences and laughs together. Watching our favorite George Carlin on TV, laughing till it hurt, and the many games of chess we played. Remembering the dream buddy, 25 cent drafts at the Limelight Lounge and the idea popped up to join the Air Force together under the buddy system lol so we did. Get out of Punxsy and see the world. I enjoyed our visit at my home in Tijeras NM. You were a SMSgt at that time heading to your last assignment. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Sonia and Goobs family. RIP my friend, your spirit lives on in my heart and mind.

I never called Gordon by his given name, never! He was Goober! His smile, laugh, and sense of humor were so magnetic as all of us East End kids grew up together through Mary A Wilson, Junior High, then High School. Goober and I both took Spanish all 4 years. I hope he knew I became a Spanish teacher! Thank you for your Service Goob! ¡Gracias por las risas y por ser un amigo tan especial! Jim

I went to kindergarten class with a boy name, Gordon Decker, a.k.a "Goober" I tried to make him laugh by standing on my chair and making a face at him when Mrs. Shick, our kindergarten teacher spotted me, she made me stand in the corner.....

I was best friends with Goober all through elementary the junior high school. We were on little league all stars together growing up. I was planning on looking him up on my next visit to NC . I was able to track him down through his brother Marty´s recent passing . He was true servant to his country . Rest in peace my friend . Jeff curry
