I met Bruce in 1983 in the very early days of minspeak and semantic compaction.
One time when I called him to introduce a v r client to him he rephrased what I was trying to say. Oh youre looking for a way to extend his ability to communicate
I never forgot that.
He instantly changed my entire approach to how I worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. A brilliant mind.

Bruce was an excellent and serious student. We were in Lois Elderage's U.S. History class together in the 11th grade. I liked him a lot and respected him greatly. Bruce was very intelligent; yet, he was cordial and patient with others. I shall miss him. I'm not at all surprised by his terrific achievements.

Bruce Baker was a generous, intelligent, compassionate human being. I was blessed to have the opportunity to associate with Bruce at various conferences, schools, workshops, and trainings. He was a truly unique individual. Our world lost a great humanitarian! His spirit will live on in the countess lives he touched!

Bruce was my Latin teacher in high school, well before Minspeak. He was an engaging teacher, dedicating to broadening his students worldview, a goal at which he was successful. Later on, when he needed some help with computers to make a prototype Minspeak, Kenneth and I were glad to help (Kenneth developed the Votrax interface while I wrote the software for the AIM-65 prototype). I have been glad to see the help that Bruces concept has given to the world. Being a friend of the family, Bruce also gave a nice oration at Kenneths funeral. Bruce will be missed by all who knew him.

I never met Mr. Baker, but without him I would have never come into the role of Assisive Technology. He change the way I taught students. He made me a better therapist teaching language on PRC devices. The world is a better place because of his work. For his family, my prayers are with you.

Bruce's life and how he used this gift of life is one to celebrate. First met him in 1987 at a 4-day program at PRC where we learned Minspeak. I owe my 30+ year career in AAC to that program with Bruce. Thank you Dr. Baker. His enthusiasm produced not only Semantic Compaction and numberless speaking engagements, but the PEC - Pittsburgh Employment Conference. Not a time would pass when I'd see him at some national AAC event where he didn't approach me to ask how I was doing. Giving voice to the voiceless ... not a bad way to exert oneself in a life's work. Again Bruce, thank you.

My deepest condolences to a great man. My students used this device that helped them communicate. His device had helped so many individuals to express themselves without frustration. You will be missed May the God of peace and comfort be with the family at this most difficult time.

I went through high school with Bruce in Logansport, Indiana, where he was president of our senior class in 1961. We shared a mutual interest in classical music, good books, and frozen custard. His career as founder and CEO of Minspeak was a source of pride for all of us who knew him, and he will be long remembered.

Bruce Baker taught a class that was called Latin in my high school in Cumberland Maryland, many years ago. What I really learned in Bruce Bakers class was a whole lot of European cultural history I would otherwise not have known anything about. In later years I came to see that class as the most college prep class I ever had.
I remember Bruce Baker reading us stories from The Magic Christian by Terry Southern or teaching us about the structure of European society in the Middle Ages and the beauty and sublime engineering of the cathedrals built by that society. He read us passages from The Intern, and he took huge delight in esoteric nonsense or play on words. It is fair to say that language was his life.
I will never forget the intensity with which he explained why the creation of Minspeak was so important to him. He simply could not imagine a more exquisite torture than to be a sentient being cut off from communication with others.
What Bruce Baker really taught was compassion for anyone who felt themselves to be other and a belief in the power of the life of the mind to set people free.
We were lucky to have known him.

Went to high school with Bruce. He was president of our class. Smartest guy I ever knew with a great sense of humor. Was looking forward to seeing him at our 1961 class reunion next year in Logansport.

I had Bruce Baker for a high school Latin class in Cumberland, Md. I didn't learn any Latin, but he helped me discover a lot about myself -- especially how to nurture and follow my own curiosities, and that it can be cool to be "intellectual." Many of us are lucky enough to cross paths with that one teacher who could connect with us at just the right time. Bruce Baker was that person for me, and he inspires me to this day.

One of the highlights of my life was meeting and interacting with Bruce Baker and all of the people who work with him. Thank you for the selfless sharing and genuine concern shown for those of us working with people who use AAC and, particularly, for people using AAC. You have changed lives for the better and built a world of supports to ensure we hear every voice, every thought, every idea. I will miss you. I wish for peace and wonderful memories to all who were so close to you. I know they will keep up the legacy you began and make you proud!

A sad Good- bye to not only a brilliant man but such a generous one too. I never would have learned about the magic behind Bruces creation had he not invited us to attend a seminar in Pennsylvania. I have such fond memories of that special weekend and the close knit group that supported you. Sincerely, Megan K., SLP in Vancouver, BC.

I will never forget zipping around Los Angeles, in my sister-in-laws SUV, with Bruce Baker and a carload full of minspeakers. I was so nervous driving the famous creator of semantic compaction around trying to find a vegetarian, Indian food restaurant for him. I was a speaker at that years Minspeak conference, being hosted at Disneyland. He was a brilliant fellow, I loved picking his brain, all the while totally in awe. He will be missed, but gosh he changed some lives...Im sure he actually saved lives. Imagine people completely isolated by a physically challenged body...but still so much to say! He gave people a way to break through and be heard.
