Edith Monroe Obituary
SPEARFISH - Edith Monroe, 87, of Spearfish, died Monday, August 2, 2004 at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.
Edith was born March 11, 1917 at Wellington, CO, the daughter of Hillard and Vernie Rice. She moved with her family to Fort Collins, CO, where she attended school. Following school Edith worked with children, was a nanny and worked at a clinic for a while. She met Charles Monroe while attending the Church of the Nazarene in Fort Collins. They were married June 1, 1939. They spent a year working up in the mountains and Charles hayed in the summer and did cattle feeding in the winter. They moved to California in June of 1941 where Charles worked as a shipyard rigger at the Mare Island Naval Ship Yard from 1941-1944. They moved to Fallon, NV where they operated a cattle ranch for 3-1/2 years. After selling the ranch they moved their family to Chesterfield, Idaho for a year before returning to California, where her husband worked at Hunts Cannery at Campbell, CA for several years, 1947-1951.
In 1956 they bought a dairy farm in Tigerton, Wisconsin, operating it until June of 1971 when they sold the farm and retired. They moved to Spearfish, SD and have lived there since.
Edith enjoyed sewing, embroidering and reading. She enjoyed being a homemaker, mother and wife. She was a charter member of the Church of the Nazarene in Fort Collins, CO.
Edith is survived by two daughters; Beverly (Jerome) Lemke and Joyce Frick, both of Spearfish, two sons; Theodore "Ted" Monroe of Wausau, WI and Virgil (Lorna) Monroe of Barron, WI, six grandchildren; Judith Lemke, Seattle, WA, Sandra Metts, Colorado Springs, CO, Sharon Lemke, Waukesha, WI, Molly Wirth, Baldwin, WI, David Monroe, River Falls, WI, and Cameron Frick of Spearfish, SD, two great-grandchildren; Kayla and Tobey Metts, and a brother; Howard Rice of Cottage Grove, OR.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles, April 11, 2000, two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004 at the Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish with Pastor Brian Wahl and Allan Loken officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish. A memorial has been established the Church of the Nazarene or the David Dorsett Health Care Facility.
