Joyce F. "Mammy" Gromis

1926 - 2023

Joyce "Mammy" F. (Fidler) Gromis, 97, of Lower Alsace Township, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Country Meadows Retirement Community. She was the wife of the late Leonard "Pat" R. Gromis. Born in Strausstown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Allen R. and Bertha D. (Spengler) Fidler. Joyce graduated from Mohnton High School and was a member of Trinity U.C.C. of Mt. Penn. Joyce was an associate for Schoeffers Bakery in Reading for many years. Joyce served in the USO during WWII as an acrobatic tumbler and dancer, traveling coast to coast entertaining our Nation's troops. Joyce was the mother of Carey Gromis of Torrance, California, husband of Cheryl; one daughter, the late Holly Rhodes, wife of Michael Rhodes of Lower Alsace Township; six grandchildren: Matthew Rhodes, husband of Laura of Exeter Township, Shannon Rhodes of Mt. Penn, Bethany, Jonathan and Johanna Gromis of Torrance, California, and Benjamin Gromis of Okinawa, Japan, and two great-granddaughters, Ryan and Reagan Rhodes of Reading. Throughout her life, Joyce and Pat enjoyed playing all kinds of card games with dear friends and relatives. Joyce was loved by many for her playful spirit, whether on the tennis court, playing cribbage or bridge. Joyce and Pat cared deeply for others and spent time serving in different ways. Joyce volunteered for years at church and with Meals on Wheels well into her 80s. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am with services beginning at 10:30 am in Trinity U.C.C. of Mt. Penn, 2449 Cumberland Avenue, Reading, PA 19606. Interment will be held at Forest Hills Memorial Park, 390 W. Neversink Rd. Reading, PA 19606.
