surrounded by his family.
Born in Reading, he was the son of Mary G. (Lawlor) Hess, West Lawn, and the late Lyman R. Hess.
He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in 1968, DeSales University in 1972 and Mount St. Mary's Seminary in 1979.
Fr. Hess began his 35-year career as a Catholic priest as Associate Pastor at St. Joseph's Church in Easton. He then served in the academic arena for 19 years including: Notre Dame High School in Easton, Muhlenberg and
Cedar Crest Colleges, and Kutztown University in
campus ministry.
In 1999 he was named
Pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Gordon, and
later served as Pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Bangor and St. Vincent
DePaul Mission, Portland. In 2009 he returned to his hometown of Reading, where he was named Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church in Millmont.
A well known speaker and preacher along the entire East Coast, Fr. Hess was highly regarded for
his charismatic leadership (Bishop's Charismatic Liaison for 30 years), but more importantly he was much loved and revered for his healing and forgiveness
ministry.
Known as the "Priest of the Holy Card," where he wrote down a healing prayer that he had been using when visiting the sick in hospitals, and now over 10,000 per month of his prayer cards are requested not only throughout the United States, but also in Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Nigeria, Japan, Bolivia, Philippines and Ireland.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his two sisters: Catherine M. Hess, Greenville, SC, and Mary Grace Rugh, Shillington. Nephew David Rugh Jr., husband of Jeanne and their daughter, Kayla; niece Kelli, wife of John Gauker and their children Emily, Meredith and Calvin; and nephew Kevin Rugh, husband of Jessie and their children Olivia, Abigail, Zeno and Eli also survive him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, March 3, 2014, in his childhood parish of St. Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, 4975 Boyertown Pike, Reading, PA 19606. I have been ordering Fr. Hess' cards for several years now, and was shocked to see that he had gone home to God. So many people have and continue to benefit from the holy card. I just ordered 200 more when I found out the sad news. May our God hold him in his eternal embrace, and I pray his spirit will be with his Mom and family in special and unique ways. from Eileen

I never met Fr.Hess but feel so sad to learn of his passing. My mother gave me one of his prayer cards and it has many names written on it. I changed the "I" to "we" or "us" as it feels like such a great way to pray for others. I found his obituary because I wanted to order cards to give away. I have a feeling he might laugh that I feel as if I need to go to confession as I have sinned by copying my card and giving it away. Judging by what others have said, I don't think he would mind. Besides, I intended to pay for the copies also. He must have been a very special person. I hope my father who just passed away on May 19th and my late husband get to meet Fr. Larry in heaven. I am grateful for the ministry of a man I never even got to meet. He must have been extremely special, caring and blessed.

I first met Father Larry at a Charismatic Day at Kutztown U. His passion and flair kept me attentive to his homily, but his love of the Lord and His Word insured my appreciation. His ministry touched hearts, and was felt far and wide. I'll remember his smile from the last time I saw him on the campus of Scranton U during their Charismatic Conference.

At the age of 15 or 16 Larry shared my room for 6 months as he was a young priest and needed housing. My parents - Jack and Anne were highly inspired by this young passionate priest in development. Being a teenager I was less execited to have a priest living with us. However in a style only God would give Larry he became "brother like" to me and mentored me to think about things not of "this world". He not doubt helped my parents start my spiritual journey with Christ and I will be forever Praise God! Sleep well my friend and know even though you may not be with us in the fresh your seeds blessed by Christ are planted all over the world. Well done good and faithful servant! I look forward to seeing you in pardise!

I am heartbroken by the passing of Fr. Hess. In 2009 I met him at our Church St Anthony. I immediatelly connected to him, He help me when I lost my job, he always told me to take good care of my boys. He attend my son Basketball game and Foofball ( he would called Brian "Saint and my Josh was "Travis" when he does not remember his name). He made me a better Catholic. When I was going to have surgery he take time to pray for me. On Sunday Jan, 19th He Celebrate his last Mass on earth...I did the children Liturgy, after mass I went to put the book back in the Sacristy, I can feel He was not well I offered him some water. Then he said to me where are the gang ( my sons) I told him the walked home. Then I went home. I pray for him every minute I can when I find out he was sick in the hospital. But God has other plan. I want to say to Mother Hess and rest of the family, Father Hess was a very caring person, Funny ( tears) I will always remember all he has done for me and my family. MAY HE REST IN PEACE.

It is with deep sadness that I heard of the death of Father Hess. Our family first met him at St. Thomas More in Allentown many years ago. He was especially kind and considerate to our two daughters who had cystic fibrosis. When our family took on the mission of co-founding Camelot for Children, Father Larry asked us if we would please use his birthday party as a fund-raiser for Camelot. When I learned of his death, I thought of the thousands of sick children who benefited from his kind gesture--and I smiled when I remembered the huge baseball theme birthday cake we all enjoyed. We were honored to meet his beautiful family. I know he was met in Heaven by so very many, many people and I picture him surrounded by all of our very special Camelot children who have gone on to Heaven before him. We will carry Father Larry in our hearts always. Thank you for sharing such a very special person with us. Our love and hugs and prayers are with you all.

My fondest memory of Fr Larry goes back nearly 40 years before he was a priest. He was just barely out of college, and was a member of The Children of Joy (a charismatic community in Allentown). At a Thurs night meeting he stood up and humbly announced to all that he had made his decision to enter the seminary and become a priest. He had such a contented look on his face and it was so obvious that he made the right decision. Little did we know how right it was and how many lives would benefit from his dedication to all.

Thinking back, I realize Father Hess left a positive impact on so many years ago. Sometimes you don't realize things like that until many years later or upon someone's passing.
I belonged to St. Anthony's in Easton, and also attended Mass at St. Mary's Chapel during his time in Easton. I believe I first met him on a Notre Dame High School retreat, when I remember one of my friends saying "this guy looks like Mick Jagger!"
It's obvious how many lives he has touched through his ministry and I've enjoyed reading up on him and learning more about him the wonderful work he did during his lifetime. I'm looking forward to listening to some of his CD's now that I know they are available.
I can only imagine the colorful memories his family and close friends have of this charismatic person.
Thank you, Father Hess for all your hard work while on earth.

To the family of Fr. Larry,
I have attended his Healing Masses for at least 20 years. I feel blessed to have gotten to enjoy his special gift of Irish wit through all those experiences. I always felt that the healing began with the laughter his wry commentary evoked... and, he was also a very holy priest - quite a gift to our entire diocese and elsewhere, to all who encountered him in one way or another. Thank you, his mother, sisters, nieces and nephews for sharing him with all of us. We will continue to pray for him and all of you.

Dear Hess Family,
Deepest sympathy to each of you on the recent death of your loved priest son/brother/uncle/great uncle.
I became acquainted with Father Hess through the "Heavenly Father" cards first given to me when Mrs. Mary Hess was visiting with her daughter, Cathy, in South Carolina. Grandma would give me copies of the cards on her arrival at the 12:10 Holy Mass at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, in Mauldin, South Carolina, where I was visiting my priest brother, Father Howard Coughlin, the pastor. I have circulated thousands of the cards over these past 20 or so years. I have been communicating with Mary and Cathy, and in the past two years Father has responded to my Christmas messages to him. I have never met him, but God has certainly done much through him. May Father now be enjoying the Eternal Embrace of our Triune God.

Mary Grace......I was saddened to hear the news about your brother. You always spoke so lovingly of him, and I would enjoy hearing your funny stories about his latest "escapade"......I know how close you were and what a beloved son, brother and uncle he was. I'm so sorry for your loss.
