Andrew Rizzo Obituary

MERIDEN - Andrew J. Rizzo Jr., 74, husband of Shirley Cello Rizzo, died peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Hartford on Jan. 24, 1936, he was the son of the late Andrew and Eufemia (Sarli) Rizzo, and had resided in Meriden for the last 49 years. He attended Hartford Public Schools. Mr. Rizzo was employed by State of Connecticut Department of Transportation, retiring after 42 years of service. He was a peacetime veteran having served with the U.S. Army. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He enjoyed playing softball and bowling until the age of 50, loved sports and was an avid Yankee fan. He enjoyed family vacations in Ocean City, Md., and organizing his Atlantic City bus trips.

Besides his wife of 49 years, he is survived by two daughters, Donna Rizzo and Paul, of Meriden, and Rosanne Gumlaw and her husband, Roger, of Meriden; two sons, Jeffrey Rizzo and his wife, Paula, of Wethersfield, and Dean Rizzo and his wife, Marci, of Meriden; six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Steven, Rachel, Jordan, Brenna and Abby; four sisters, Kitty, Terry, Angie and MaryLou; one brother, Dominic; one brother-in-law, Tom, and his wife, Bonnie; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Annette; and a brother, Michael.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, Jan. 20, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Everyone is asked to gather at the church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends and family may call at the John J. Ferry and Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, on Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. www.jferryfh.com

My wife and I offer our condolences on your loss.
We had intended to be there but a family situation came up. My wife is Jeanne Woronick who went to school with Shirley and i am Bruce Collins who worked for so many years with Andy and Bob Discipio. Andy was a great guy and I know all will miss him. We had many wonderful times together at work and playing softball, basketball and so on. Andy was a great athelete. Again, sorry we can't pay our respects in person but our hearts go out to all.
