May 25, 2025
A scholar, athlete, writer, humorist, leader and passionate person dedicated to authenticity and the unremitting love of his family, friends and students, his mark as a kind and compassionate person will remain indelible at each of the places where he served in so many important capacities, including his memorable leadership as Deerield's 54th headmaster. His twelve-year stint at Deerfield offers just one significant example of a remarkable human being that was commited by example to scholarship and humble caring for his students, colleagues, family and friends. He was a genuine and generous person in each and every diverse role of his life--one to admire and inspire.

Dr Widmer´s obituary, in its own right, is a worthy read. I do remember his years at Deerfield, and his ground-breaking appointment by King Abdullah. What an amazing life, and appreciation to his family for sharing this.

I only met him a few times during my 14 years at DA, as I arrived after his tenure there. Eric was such a lovely, kind person. My first time hearing him speak was when he was addressing the students and sharing his story of how he came to Deerfield from the "other part of Connecticut". His openness and vulnerability from the stage was truly engaging and endearing. The last time we met was at his Reunion, helping get photos into his PPT presentation on educational leadership & global education. Truly wonderful. Miss Viz and family: my deepest sympathy for your loss.

And there goes one brilliant educator and an honorable and memorable human being. Not many like him. His gifts will indeed be savored for generations of teachers, students, and colleagues. I personally will miss him, but will hold him close in my heart! Thank you, dear friend!
