Thelma Moeckel Obituary

Thelma Emily Loven Moeckel

Deerfield, MA - Thelma Emily Loven Moeckel passed away peacefully April 20, 2024, at her home in Deerfield, Massachusetts after a long and wonderful life filled with much laughter, music, dance, and many adventures on her travels around the world. She was 90 years old.

Thelma was born in Somerville Massachusetts on June 20, 1933; the third of four children born to Nils Akesson Loven and Adeline Rosemond Loven. Thelma went to Somerville schools and graduated with bachelor's degrees from both the Boston Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music, which she attended concurrently and where she majored in music and dance. Thelma was predeceased by her older sisters: Martha Bicskei and Dorathea Craig, and her younger brother Richard Loven. Later in her life, Thelma attended Westfield University and earned her master's degree in music education. Thelma was a dedicated music educator for over four decades, teaching at schools in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Thelma spent most of her teaching career at the Franklin County Technical High School where she taught Music, Ski Team, Student Council, and Yearbook. Thelma enjoyed many activities in life: skiing, reading, and swimming, but her favorite activity was spending time with her grandchildren. Thelma loved to have fun and was always ready to break into a song or demonstrate how to do the Hokey-Pokey. She participated in many community theater productions and was a long-term board member of Arena Civic Theater.

Thelma married Wilson E. H. Moeckel in 1958 and they celebrated 58 years of marriage before his death in 2017. Together they had three children. Two sons: Dr. Bruce Moeckel (died 2015) and Brian Moeckel (died 1997), and a surviving daughter Dr. Stephanie Moeckel-Cole (spouse David Cole). She was so very proud of her six surviving grandchildren: Atticus Moeckel-Cole, Andrew Moeckel, Christopher Moeckel, Camille Moeckel, Peter Moeckel, and Charis Moeckel-Cole and loved to talk about their many accomplishments.

A Celebration of Life is planned for May 18, 2024, at 11am at the First Congregational Church of Sunderland (91 South Main St, Sunderland, MA), reception to follow the service.

I was a music student of Ms. Moeckels. She helped me earn the right to become one of a hand full of music students to represent the school in Western Mass District Chorus all 4 yrs of high school there, along with a All State Chorus recommendation and two Youth of America concert choir invites. I worked under her as music teacher, lead trumpet, and asst director for the school band at the time, And covered her classes when she was out on field trips or in meetings.. to this day I still look up to her. She brought two good friends together when we did not know each of us was eyeing the other. And that is just a little part of how she influenced my live. R.I.P. Ms Moeckel, you have the band and chorus to conduct til we met again..

Dear Stephanie and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories dating to Eaglebrook days of your brothers and both your parents. Your mom was a no nonsense, can do gal with an incredible work ethic and a Huge sensitivity for the Arts and Music. While she didn´t demand excellence she expected that we all give it our best. She left a lasting positive impression. My sincerest condolences. Harriet Paine

I worked with Thelma during her "second" career at Franklin County Tech School. When I met her she was retired from teaching Music but was still working part-time teaching a yearbook class, subbing, and helping out any way she could. Thelma always had a smile even when working on a Saturday making sure the students didn't miss a critical yearbook deadline. She will be missed. My condolences to the family.
