Barry Jacobs

We Knew Him As "The Bear"

By His Daughter, Cari Jacobs

How do you capture the spirit of a man when his heart, his laughter, his love is too vast too measure. How can you begin to put down on paper the immense generosity and loyalty one man has given to so many? Many of us in town knew him. We knew Barry Jacobs as a Stocktonian, born and raised in our then small town along with his Lebanese cousins. Schooled a Catholic at St Gertude's, St. Mary's High and then graduating from Santa Clara University, Barry was a dedicated local citizen. When asked if he could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? "Stockton," he would say matter-of-factly with a small wink in his expressive eyes and a "duh!" in his tone. "That's why I live here." When prodded on perhaps an African Safari or a trip to Europe, he would shrug his shoulders and say, "I have everything I need right here…my friends, my family...what more could I want?"

Some knew him as a successful stock broker, working for years in Stockton at Dean Witter and Merrill Lynch where he won the business of many who trusted him to grow their money. Others knew him as an avid golfer and permanent fixture at the Stockton Golf and Country Club where he could often be seen in the McKenzie grill bent over a game of gin with his closest friends, as they would nudge him to keep him awake. We knew Barry as a loving, proud father of his two kids, Eric and Cari, and his three grandchildren, Ava, Kylie and Alexa---and as a devoted son to his mother, Mary. He had regular family get-togethers so he could talk and joke with his son. Eric, and cuddle with his daughter, Cari. He would tempt and chide with his young granddaughters with silver dollars or big wet sloppy kisses, while jokingly rolling his eyes as his mother, Mary, would ask those at the table to take on third or fourth helpings of her famous cooking. Others hunted with him for duck, pigs or doves. Or placed a bet along side him at the track. Or went on multi-day camping trips to fish and sit around the campfire, one of his favorite things to do.

He loved the swimming pool and during Stockton summers would leave the Club early to head over to his condo community's pool to lounge in the water and spend time catching up with neighbors.

And those lucky to know his most intimate sides knew him as a lover of music---Boticelli and Povorati--- that would very often bring tears to his eyes, though he had heard the song 100 times over.

The Bear was always Bullish! Barry and I spent many years together, both at Merrill and then later, at his own firm on March Lane. We both shared the ups and downs of life but always remained friends. Life won't be the same without The Bear.

My heartfelt sympathies are with all of you during this time.

I had the great pleasure of meeting and getting to know all of you (Eric, Cari, Situ and Sally) and I was saddened to hear of your loss. I feel fortunate to have had the pleasure of getting to know Barry. He was something of a surrogate father to me for about 4 years while his son and I dated. I have fond memories of him and appreciate him for the character that he was. He was a wonderful man, generous, funny and kind. Much like his mother and his children.

His passing feels like the end of an era. I hope that you will find solice in the many happy memories of times spent with him. I know that I will think of him warmly and though I have not seen him in more than 15 years, I will miss him.

Barry has been a friend for over 30 years. During the last few years when we lived in the same condo complex "the Bear" would always be found in the swimming pool in the afternoon, where he visited with his neighbors. Now, we miss him every time we go to or from the complex.

I met Barry in 1966 when he and my husband, Tom, went through 6 mos. training for Dean Witter in San Francisco. We all became good friends and I went to work for him in 1977 @Merrill Lynch. He asked me to help out in the opening of the new Merrill office as his secretary for about 6 weeks...I was there for 27 years. He was a wonderful boss. a loving person and a great friend. I feel priviliged to have been a small part of his life. To Cari, Eric, his mom and his entire family, I send my deepest sympathies. I will miss "The Bear" and his smile and hugs. Love, Missy.

My heart felt sympathy goes out to Barry's family. I never had the pleasure of meeting any of you; Barry started his day having coffee with me and a few of his friends at Lyons restaurant. It has been my pleasure to serve him and get to know him. We will miss his quick wit and him arguing with Dick and Bernie about who's turn it is to pay for toast. There will always be a vacant place at the table, that no one will ever fill. Our hearts are with your family. Susie and The Coffee Boys at Lyon's Restaurant
