Jane Hobbs Obituary

Carmichael

May 23, 1927 - August 19, 2007

Jane Hobbs, mother, grand-mother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, teacher and long-time friend to many, died Sunday, August 19, 2007 at age 80 in Carmichael, CA and will be greatly missed by all. Born in Lemmon, South Dakota, Jane was the youngest child of Eva and Marion Fuller. As a child, during the depression she traveled extensively in the South Dakota area with her parents as they built roads for the WPA and she gained and never lost her interest in new places or her ability to make instant friends for life. Graduating from High School in Spearfish SD she started her first teaching job at a one room school house near Bison SD. She later went on to get a masters degree in Business Education and to teach at Black Hills State College and at high schools in Douglas WY, Spearfish and Belle Fourche, SD and East Union in Manteca CA for 30 years. Jane married Alden Hobbs in March, 1947 and had four daughters Shirley Jane, Ruth Marie, Elizabeth Ann (Betty) and Patricia Jo. As a home maker for eight years before going back to college, she canned her own vegetables, baked her own bread and made most of the clothes for herself and her girls. Jane and Alden divorced in 1969 while she was teaching in Manteca. Willing to tackle any activity, among many other things Jane learned to fly a small airplane; personally built an addition to and remodeled her house in Stockton CA; sewed designer wedding dresses for Patricia and Elizabeth, built a bed with bookcases and drawers for Ruth; helped construct a two story dome house in the Black Hills; and built a canoe. After she broke both her arms hiking in Arizona her rehab was to build a 15 x 10 foot wooden shed using hand tools. She traveled in Europe and Mexico and as a lover of the outdoors; she went wilderness camping in Alaska with Shirley, backpacking in California with family and friends, and fishing and day hiking wherever she traveled. While teaching in California, Jane began traveling around the United States in her Chinook camper. And after retiring in 1987, she bought a huge truck and fifth-wheel and continued this journey for over nine years, alone and with her grandchildren. She settled as a "snow bird" wintering in Roosevelt Arizona and summering in the Black Hills outside Custer South Dakota. During these years she revived her interest in art - creating masterpiece cross stitch pictures and intricate Christmas Stockings for each of her family members. Other favorite pass times included spending time with family and friends visiting and playing cards, scrabble, dominos and UNO. Jane is survived by her daughters Patricia (Jim) Schroeder, Ruth Hobbs, Elizabeth (Robert) Varin and Shirley Hobbs; her sister Mary Randall; her brother John Fuller; grandchildren Mary Elizabeth Hobbs, Alison (Dan) Trombley, Brian (Andrea) Parker, Li Jane (James) Brunner, Darin (Mitsue) Dahlinger, and Jeff Dahlinger ; great grandchildren Jessika, Cathleen, Aaron, Asher, Brennen, Alden, Alex, Emmet and Sougo; multiple layers of cousins, nieces, nephews; "adopted" family members; and many friends and students who loved her well. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Edward Fuller. No services will be held. Lodi Funeral Home is assisting the

family with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the charity of the donor's choice.

Thank you for sharing the photo of your mom. She was my typing teacher at East Union. I was impressed by her strong confidence and ability as a teacher. Thank you for sharing the "rest of her story" with us. What an amazing woman you got to call mom. Blessings on you.

I laughed at the phrase in the obituary that Jane is survived by "adopted" family members; I was one of those. When Jane had a heart episode while she was teaching ROP at Manteca Adult School, she was placed in ICU and we were told she couldn't have any visitors except immediate family. I went to the hospital and said I was her daughter. Jane didn't miss a beat when the nurse announced that her daughter Norena had come to visit! I never pass a little grey haired lady driving a truck and camper FAR too large for her body without thinking of Jane.

To Janes Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Janes
passing. She is one of the most
remarkable people I've known. It
seems like she could do anyhing.
I remember the remodeling project
on Harding Way, and what a fine
job she did. Jane taught me to
make bread and all these years
later i still bake it. What a
beautiful tribute you have had
printed in the Record, My thoughts
are with all of you. I will
remember Jane as one of the most
gifted and talanted people and
her generosity in sharing those
special qualities with others.

You are so lucky to be the family of such a role model. She was a teacher of mine of which I really respected. Although I didn't know all of the details of her personal life as a student at East Union Class of 1969, I now understand why she was such an approachable person. She experienced so much in her life and gave so much joy. God Bless You Mrs. Hobbs!!

To the Hobbs family:
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. She was not only one of my favorite teachers in Junior High but also a friend as well. Her girls and I went to school together from first grade on until seniors in high school. She also helped out with my Girl Scout troop. We all loved camping in the Black Hills. Those are some great memories for us all. May God grant you peace during this time. She was a great person and loved life.
