Herbert Donald Akerley of The Villages, FL, a former long-time resident of Neversink, NY died Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages, FL. He was 77.
The son of the late Herbert Daniel and Maxine Donaldson Akerley, he was born March 22, 1944 in Monticello, NY.
Herb worked 22 years for Channel Masters in Ellenville NY in the shipping and receiving Department until the company moved to North Carolina. He then went to work for Sullivan County DPW where he was employed for 20 years before retiring as a Construction Equipment Operator in 2006. He proudly served Our Country in the U.S. Army from 1965-1967; was a member of the Grahamsville United Methodist Church in Grahamsville, NY and former Dennis Akerley VFW post.
He enjoyed landscaping, geocaching, sudoku and in addition while in Florida, shuffleboard, Samba, and Bunco. He will be remembered as being kindhearted, hardworking, and devoted to his family.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years Kathleen "Kathy" Akerley, at home; one daughter, Lynn McKeon and her husband, Sean of Grahamsville; three grandsons, Brent and his wife, Danielle, Zachary and Logan; a brother, Bob Akerley and his wife, Vi of Grahamsville; a sister, Maxine Buck of Milford, PA; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Gorman of Liberty, Hazel Akerley of Liberty and Olga Akerley of Woodridge; several nieces and nephews and his close friend, Tony Carmeci.
In addition to his parents, Herb was predeceased by four brothers, Harold (Hetz), Kenneth, Ralph and Dennis; two sisters Lulubelle Gloor and Helen Johnston; and a daughter, Ruth.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to Noon, Tuesday, June 29, 2021 in the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY. Funeral services will be at Noon on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 in the funeral home. The Rev. Gretchen Fischer will officiate. Burial will be in the Rural Cemetery, Grahamsville, NY.
