John Coen Obituary

John Coen
January 17, 1961 - June 19, 2021
Newburgh, NY
John Coen of Newburgh, New York passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at home, after a hard-fought battle with kidney cancer. John was born on January 17, 1961, in Newburgh, NY. He was a local business owner of Art and John's Auto Body Shop, a family run business that John put all his dedication and hard work into.
John was an enthusiastic motocross racer, with a need for speed. His passion and love of the sport led him to become the founder of Diamondback MX, a track that was "Built by Racers, For Racers". John was also a member of the AMA and MSC organizations.
John was a wonderful man who always knew how to make you smile with his corny jokes and playful humor. He was the son of Arthur and Nancy Coen and brother to both Angela and Carlo (Maria Coen). John was a special person to his family including his wife, Kelly Coen; son, Jac Coen and step-children, Paul Interval (Kate Duggan) and Elizabeth Grinchell (Matt Grinchell). He was a loving grandfather to Julia and Scott Mongillio and an uncle to six nieces and three nephews. The family sends special thanks for the care and support from Scott Craft and Sandra Lodato.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 6.p.m. with a 5:30 p.m. eulogy on Saturday June 26, 2021 at Hudson Valley Funeral Home 239 Quassaick Ave. (Rte94) New Windsor NY.

John was one of the first people to pay me check for writing articles for the Hudson Valley Motocross News.

The confidence I gained from setting my have print led my l me like may of the D34 MSC racers who ventured into the National competition, I ventured into national and international motivate 6 events. I rubbed elbows with the stars on my sport and while I didn't turn Pro kind John and brother Carlo with the throttle, I did turn Pro with the pen. And it all started with John Coen and the Hudson Valley Motocross News.

I first saw John on the cover of Cycle News she with the pull I had with them I asked, and they complied and ran a similar from page blurb about John's passing. John loved and loved life the way he race, never giving up until the race was over.

I met John at his track. He had no idea who I was, as all I knew he was the owner of the track. But he seen my enthusiasm for riding bikes and offered me a job watering the track on race days. It was like winning the lottery. I loved it. From there he moved me up to the finish line flagger.
Come to find out we are 3rd or 4th cousins. John always had a smile and was so humble and kind. Not just to me but to everyone. I wish the world had more people like John in it. You will be missed dearly John. You´ve touched many lives. God bless

Very sad to learn of John´s passing. Met him many years ago when I was operating Broome-Tioga Sports Center. Always enjoyed his company. I remember when he opened Diamondback. He was very proud of accomplishing that.We had many discussions about running a motocross track. Always positive. Overcame a lot of obstacles with the track. Built a wonderful place for riders & families to enjoy the great sport of motocross. He will be missed & remembered by many. My condolences to his family.
