Ivy Laufman Obituary

Community Volunteer
A 37 year long resident of Cottonwood died September 13, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness. Ivy was born a twin on November 16, 1922 in Hardin, Montana, the site of Custer's Last Stand. She was the daughter of sheep rancher James MacCowan and his wife Mabel. She along with her twin sister, Irene, older sister Mary and younger brother Donald lived on a farm outside Fairview, Montana which bordered both Montana and North Dakota. She went to business school in Billings, Montana and moved to Washington, DC to work for the Maritime Commission. In 1945 she moved to California with her sister Irene to join Mary in Los Angeles as the war was ending. Ivy joined furniture manufacturer, Brown and Saltzman for several years and then spent 13 years at Flintkote as an executive secretary.

Ivy met her husband Robert Laufman in Los Angeles and married soon after in 1952. Together they lived in LaMirada, in Southern California until 1976. Robert retired and they moved to Cottonwood and built a house in 1977. Together with her brother in law Roy Pearce and her sister Mary, they opened Bix Antiques and Restoration. Bix was a source of great enjoyment and fulfillment until Bob's death in 1985. At that time Ivy redoubled her involvement in local charities and service organizations. She was the President of the Cottonwood Garden Club from 1993-1994, worked on helping fundraise for the Cottonwood Volunteer Fire Department in addition to other local causes.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Mabel MacCowan, her brother Donald and husband Robert. She is survived by her sister Irene Hodgert, brother in law Alan Hodgert, John and Jean Laufman and Pat Laufman. She has numerous nieces and nephews including Janet and husband Joe Farmer, Gabrielle Farmer, Chris Farmer, Charley Laufman, Margaret Laufman and Andrea Almon, Dan and Kathy Laufman, Jim and Betsy Laufman, Chris and Cindy Laufman and numerous nieces, grandnieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice. Some of Ivy's favorites are the Cottonwood Volunteer Fire Department and Haven Humane in Redding.

I had the blessing of being mentored by this wonderful 1st Lady of Cottonwood. Ivy was one of my very best friends in life. I have her lemon bar recipe & I continue to grow her violets & share them with anyone who is interested. She was one of the BEST. Rest in Peace dear friend.
