Alice Newton Obituary
Alice Truelove Newton died Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville. She was the daughter of Paschal Estell Truelove and Annie Jane Lawrence Truelove, the youngest of eight children. She was born in Chatham County May 4, 1921, and graduated from Apex High School as the valedictorian of her class. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Fred W. Newton, in 2005.
Alice and her husband Fred owned and operated a dairy farm in Vance County from 1942 until 1998. She was known for her active role in church, family and community in Vance County. She served as president of the PTA of Aycock School, president of the Woman's Missionary Union of Carey Baptist Church and later of the Cullom Baptist Association. She was one of the first women to serve as an ordained deacon of Carey Baptist Church, including a term as deacon chair. Other services included Sunday School teacher, chair of a pastor search team, moderator of the Cullom Baptist Association and member of the General Board of the N.C. Baptist State Convention. She was known for her gracious hospitality as she invited the world into her home, hosting missionaries, educators, international students and others who visited the Newton Dairy Farm. She and her husband enjoyed many dairy tours around the world with other North Carolina dairy-farming couples. In 1998, she and her husband relocated to Greenville to Cypress Glen Retirement Community, where they delighted in making new friends and being part of a vital community and active members of The Memorial Baptist Church.
She is survived by four children, Fred Newton Jr. and wife Lottie of Parkersburg, W.Va., Dr. Dale Newton and wife Emmie of Greenville, Betsy Herman and husband Dennis of Raleigh, and Sharon Newton of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, Carrie Struble and husband Earl of Raleigh, Lillie Newton and husband Frank Guzek of Charlotte, Alan Newton and wife Amy of Greenville, Dan Newton and wife Megan Smith of Burlington, David Newton and wife Elizabeth of Catonsville, Md., Ivan Herman and wife Susan of Sacramento, Calif., Stephen Herman of Bethesda, Md., and Eleanor Herman of Denver, Col.; 10 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service and receiving of friends at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Memorial Baptist Church, 1510 S.E. Greenville Blvd. Graveside service with interment of ashes will be at noon on Thursday, Dec. 30 at Carey Baptist Church Cemetery, 1295 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson.
