My friend Carl. What those words convey! So many memories, so much emotion.

He died early Sunday morning, Nov. 17, 2013.

We had been acquaintances and working colleagues since the 1970's when we met on university committees and in the Faculty Senate. We became friends in the early 1990's through our mutual interests in computer technology and ECU campus technology initiatives.

Carl was named the first official webmaster for ECU. He was a talented programmer whose skills well served web development in those early years. He was always the person I turned to for assistance in my own work with technology in the School of Music.

When he retired in 1999, he gathered another friend, George Bailey (chair of Philosophy) and myself for weekly "meetings" at local bars and eateries. Later others joined us, Jim Wirth and Paul Tschetter, and for a time, Jim Rees.

We were regulars at Christy's EuroPub for years after initially meeting at Buffalo Wild Wings, then moved to Chicos downtown, trying Hooters, Winslow's and finally settling on aTavolàs for nearly 14 years of discussion about everything in the universe and beyond.

Carl could be an exasperating person with his adamant convictions, but at heart he was a lovable, warm person who loved nothing more than his friends and heated discussion.

Some of us had continual email discussions with Carl and I find myself still mentally formulating yet another topic for such exchanges that could become rather heated. Yet his affection and respect were always evident in the depth of his reasoning and thought. I miss that.

Carl's sense of humor often was expressed through ludicrous points of view disguised as serious topics and discussion. Often I accused him of quoting from the Journal of Irreproducible Results for justification of a point of view or "proof." He loved nothing more than stupidity clothed in seemingly rational argument. I miss that also, very much.

And of course his appreciation of the arts included his favorite group, the Trans Siberian Orchestra and the music of ABBA.

Those of us who knew Carl have an unending void in our lives now.

Carl, wherever you are now, I hope that you have solved, finally, the Big Questions.

I'll miss Carl -- our memorable public debate arranged by Father Mulholland, his pointing out that E = mc squared antedated Einstein, his support of his friends, his reports of sailing (to Bermuda, too) and of a great struggle across Darien.
Visiting carladler.org, lovely and fun to be sure, is unfortunately the best we can do now.
