Jessie Jones Obituary

Jessie B. Short Jones was born in Greenville on July 23, 1930 to the late Willie and Lizzie Short. "Puddin," as she was affectionately called, attended Greenville Industrial High School. She met and married the late Clifton Eugene Jones and four children were born. Her son, Carlos Antonio preceded her in death. Puddin' was known for her kind heart and open arms. Puddin' was a witness to the adage, "It takes a village to raise a child." This was evident by the numerous people she touched. Her home was adorned with the sign "Welcome to Puddin's Place." Puddin's unselfish giving has earned her a star in her crown. Jessie B. retired from Pitt County Memorial Hospital in May of 1996 after giving 43 years of dedicated service. Nurses, radiologists, technicians, and managers were birthed from Ms. Jones leadership. Ms. Jones loved pickles and soon became the "Pickle Lady" in the kitchen. On Thursday, May 25, 2006, Puddin' received an Angelic escort to eternal Paradise. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Short Jr. and Lizzie Davis Short. Three brothers and a sister also preceded Puddin' in death, Willie Short Sr., Louis Henry Short, Samuel Short, and Mary Short Lovett. She leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories with her children, Beatrice Atkinson, Judith Edwards, Muriel J. Hines, all of Greenville; sisters, Annie Reed, Beulah Hardy and Clara Scott, all of Greenville, Myrtle Duncan of Fayetteville, and Jean L. Short of New Haven, Conn.; brothers, Alton Short of Danbury, Conn., Edward Earl Short of Wallingford, Conn. and Joseph Short of the home; grandchildren, Terence Edwards of Germany, Paula Edwards, Adrian Atkinson and wife, Tamara, Tanisha Johnson and husband, Dedrick, Tammara Atkinson, Sharlene Jones-Lewis of Richmond, Va.; great-grandchildren, Christopher Edwards, Alasia Atkinson, Sha-Talia and Sha-Kiya Johnson, Keyshan Edwards, LaToya Taft, Amber Garris and Aiyana Atkinson; great-great-grandchild, Akisha Brown; uncle and aunt, James and Louise Ebron; godchildren, Allysia Parker of Greenville and Jacqueline Scott Smith of Glendale, Ariz. Funeral service will be Saturday, June 3, 2006 at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Short Family Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday from 2-5 p.m. at Flanagan Chapel with the Wake from 6:30-8 p.m. at Flanagan Chapel. Arrangements by Flanagan Funeral Home, Inc.

Beatrice, Judith & Muriel,

I was sadden to hear of the passing of your mother. We all grew up as neighbors when I lived on Vanderbilt Lane many, many years ago. There was such harmony and pride among us as members of Eppes Marching Band. Ironically, I found out tonight of Ms. Puddin's passing from Johnny Wooten. Please know that I will continue praying for you in the days, weeks and months ahead.

I hope to see you when I come home for the July 4th Eppes festivities.

God bless each of you as you celebrate your mother's legacy.

Bee,Judy,and Diva M.,

My deepest condolences to you during your time of loss. Time continues to march on, and the world as we knew it has transitioned so very much. It seems as if it was just yesterday, and I sat behind Bee and Judy as my classmates and I took delight in removing your hairbows from those long beautiful thick braids and giggling because you guys never missed them from your hair. Your mom (Ms. Puddin) undoubtedly had taken meticulous care in making sure that her twin girls had every hair in place and were pressed ever so neatly in there matching little dresses. The love she put into caring for you and baby sister Muriel was very evident. We're older now and must watch those we love depend on our loving care, and yes, also watch them pass on to their heavenly reward. But, thank God he gave us those many years of precious memories. From Fleming street School to now, we have weathered all sorts of storms, and yes, you will weather this one too. You always had a beautiful relationship with your mom, and now through this transition, that relationship will be what will help you through with the help of our dear saviour. Stay strong girls, and look to the hills...from which cometh your strength. The class of '70 is praying with and for you. I love you all.

Dear Muriel and family,

Mrs. Jones was like a grandmother to me. I used to call her the general, she kept dietary in line. I enjoyed working with her, Im thankful for her mentorship. I left dietary with a work ethic that has propelled thru the ranks. I owe alot credit to your dear mother. I remember the day I applied for a job, she was eating pickles in the office and had only one thing to say - I hope you like mopping floors.

I will truly miss her but she lives on in all of us.

God bless you and your family.

Diva Muriel and Family,

I am sending your family prayers of comfort to help you during your lost. We at Embrace have been blessed to be apart of both Muriel and Jessie's life. I know that Mother Jessie was full of faith and knew that the Lord was preparing her for her eternal resting place. And for those of us left to remember her should remember just how strong her faith was. Mother Jessie was an inspiration and a testimony of just how good GOD is. She is no longer in pain and she has gone to be with the Father. Until we met again!
