John Mahnesmith Obituary

WATAGA - John Mahnesmith Jr., 86, Wataga, died at 9:50 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at Heartland Healthcare Center, Galesburg.
He was born May 26, 1928, in Altona, the son of John V. and Ethel (Miller) Mahnesmith. He married Norma H. Davis on Oct. 29, 1949, in Knoxville. She preceded him in death Nov. 10, 2009.
He is survived by two sons, Allen (Jane) Mahnesmith and Roger (Dianna) Mahnesmith, both of Wataga; one daughter, Rose (Rob) Robbins of Wataga; seven grandchildren, Timothy (Cindy) Mahnesmith, B.J. Mahnesmith, Travis (Rachel) Mahnesmith, Kyle (Mackenzie) Mahnesmith, Casey (Megan) Robbins, Carrie (Ed) Schenck, and Jennifer (Ryan) Robbins; and eight great-grandchildren, A.J., Lane, Jacob, Dylan, Olivia, Jensen, Landon and Zoey. Also surviving are two sisters, Myrna (Jim) Moats of Yates City and Jeanette (Sonny) Lucas of Wataga; two brothers, Ken (Dixie) Mahnesmith and Norman Mahnesmith, both of Galesburg; and a brother-in-law, Leo Davis of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, six brothers, and one sister.
John worked as a machinist for the Burlington Northern Railroad for many years, retiring in 1993. He enjoyed golfing at Laurel Greens, restoring old cars, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville. Deacon Rod Gray will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville. Interment will take place at the Wataga Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Judes.
