Phil Gerding Obituary

ROSEVILLE - Phil Gerding, 92, Roseville, passed away at 3:22 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at home.
He was born March 19, 1918, in Ottawa, the son of Aurther and Pearl Bennett Gerding. He married Nancy Staat in 1945. She preceded him in 1982.
He is survived by three daughters, Paula Pieper of Roseville, Betsy Hanley of Springfield, and Dawn (Rick) Beasley of Richland, Mo.; one son, Thomas Gerding of Roseville; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and one great-great-grandchild on the way; and one brother, Paul Gerding of Chillicothe. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother and one sister.
He was born in Ottawa, and graduated from Spalding High School entering the service after graduation. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He was an anti-aircraft gunner on the island of Saipan. He has been in the newspaper business most of his life and has been with the Roseville paper since 1947. He was a diehard Cub Fan. He has always been a giver to family and community. He was a member of the Roseville American Legion.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, in Roseville Township Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded at the grave by Lawson Babbitt American Legion Post 614. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Roseville Community Center.
