Deryl Huling Obituary

Deryl "Mark"

Huling

1942 - 2014

The support and love of family and friends was ever present as Mark lived at home on the McKenzie River and fought the daily challenges of Multiple System Atrophy. He passed on October 20, 2014. He was 72. An intelligent, gentle man of many skills; his generosity, sense of humor, and love of family and friends will be his legacy.

Mark was born September 16, 1942 in Forks, Washington to Deryl and Mae Huling. Brothers married sisters (Deryl and Dale married Mae and Ruth) so the cousins were raised as closely as brothers and sisters in Forks. The family owned the Forks Shingle Company during those early years. By 1944, both families had moved to Seattle and opened Huling Brothers of West Seattle. As a boy, Mark grew up in the auto industry, working various jobs on the car lots as his training continued. He developed a love for old cars and took on many projects. Later he discovered boats and the excitement of flat- bottom racing. Most of all, he loved collegiate sports, especially the Ducks, supporting them win or lose

Mark graduated in 1960 from West Seattle High and began classes at the University of Washington. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Army National Guard, receiving training at Ft. Sill and Ft. Bragg. By 1963, Mark and his father Deryl had moved to Eugene to open Huling Buick. When the company was sold in 1985, Mark worked in the home remodeling industry and telecommunications business. During the 1970's and 80's, Mark volunteered his time and energy to civic groups such as the Active 20-30 Club where he served as president in 1974.

Mark is survived by his wife of 48 years, Pam of Eugene, and daughters Paige (Obrien), Kamara, and Brandilyn (Martinez) all of Gilbert, Arizona. Seven grandchildren, toddlers to high school, enriched his life. Brothers Jeff and Ty (Sally) of Eugene provided constant care and support. 95 and still active, Mae was the model of strength and encouragement for Mark while the large extended Huling family continued to interact with Mark up to the end.

The family would like to thank all those involved with the Cascade Hospice program and caregivers Jennifer and Christa for all their loving care and attention given to Mark. A celebration of life will be announced after the first of the year.

Not sure what to say?

This was taken the last day I saw my father.

My father was a rare gem in this world. He was unfortunately taken away from us far too soon. Words cannot describe the emotions my mother, sisters and I are dealing with. Not one hour goes by that I don't think of this kind, gentle, loving family man.

I miss and love you every second of every day, Poppi. I pray you are enjoying your youthful health with our beloved pets and family up in heaven.

I had the fortunate pleasure of being one of Mark's caregivers. He was a wonderful person who always showed concern for everyone and never felt sorry for himself. I feel truly blessed that I had a chance to meet him and help him. He was a wonderful and generous man. May he rest in peace.

Pam, my name is one I hope you remember from West 22nd Avenue. I have happy memories of your family but especially of Mark with his enthusiasm for our Christmas Eve luminaria displays. Those were good times.

I send sympathy and hope you find comfort in knowing that Mark was admired and respected: an all around Good Guy! Sending warm wishes to you...

Mark was such a character. I loved our many chats and never knew what the topic of conversation would be. My heart aches for Pam and his daughters and grandchildren. Prayers and hugs to all of them.

Our neighbor, Mark Huling, was one stellar human being and always a delight to be around. He always had something to say or a an interesting story to tell, usually ending with a different twist. Mark was a very kind and caring man. He was incredible at networking, always bringing like people together. The world would be a much better place with more people like Mark in it. Rest in peace my friend.
