Samuel Cleave Obituary

Samuel Webster Van Cleave passed away 2/19/14 in Berkeley, CA. He was 34 years old. He is survived by his wife, Tegin Helton, his father and mother, Frank and Linda Van Cleave, his two sisters, Jade and Miranda Van Cleave, his brother, Bo Stout, and Jade's two children, Damone Seaton and Mariah Van Cleave, as well as many other relatives. Sam graduated from South Eugene International High School in 1997 and then from the University of Oregon in 2001. He had a BA in History and eight automotive certifications. He loved his family, music, writing, and the natural world. He is deeply missed.

Sam was my student in poetry writing at UO. Although I taught several thousand students over 20 years, some stay in mind. Sam is one of these. He wrote some distinctive poems, and with his permission I used one of these in subsequent undergraduate writing packets. I grieve for his loss.
