James (Rooster) Denton age 68 of Lawrenceburg, IN passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026 after a two-year long battle with cancer. He was born on July 14, 1957 in Batesville, IN. He was the son of Douglas and Norma (Chapman) Denton.
James was a 1975 graduate of Lawrenceburg high school. He attended college at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN earning a four-year degree in Environmental and Safety Management. He was employed with the Department of Labor (OSHA) for 31 years and concluded his employment as a Safety Consultant working part-time for seven years. He was proud of the impact he had on safety which likely saved many lives, once even saving men from a collapse moments later.
Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting arrowheads and artifacts, as well as playing sports including horseshoes, golf, basketball and softball to name a few. He was passionate about IU basketball and football and spent many years in a fantasy football league with his brothers and friends. His brothers and friends and their kids loved going on the Big D Classic fishing trip.
He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Ethel Denton (Vaughn) married for 45 years; Three children: Gina Marie Denton of Cincinnati, OH: James Floyd Denton of Cincinnati, OH and Lori Jean Denton of Florence, KY. James has three grandchildren whom he adored: Ethan James Vome, Michael Wayne Denton, and Joaquin James Denton. Jim is also survived by two brothers, David Denton (wife Pat) and Deron Denton (wife Tonda); and one sister Linda Worley (husband Wayne), as well as his sister in-law Roxanne Denton. His identical twin brother, and best friend, John Douglas Denton preceded him in death by just a few months this past fall. Jim also had two nephews Austin Denton and Seth Denton and five nieces: Josie Denton, Stacey Worley, Toni Worley, and Sharon Worley and Sarah Denton (deceased) and numerous other beloved family members and countless friends.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fitch-Denney Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greendale Cemetery in Greendale, IN.
