Roy L. McCoy, age 91, passed away January 24, 2015 at Hendrick Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 28 at 11:00 Am at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Norman Patten officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park.

Roy was born July 19, 1923 on the family farm located in Jones County near Hodges, Texas. Roy was the third son born to Thomas Bogan McCoy and Lora Estelle McCoy (Self).

Roy attended Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He was trained as a fighter and transport pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II. Roy was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the 813th Army Air Force Base Unit in 1944.

After separating from military service, Roy married Audrey Eloise Hudgens in March 1946. After the war years, Roy began his sales career working for Charlie Kessel at Grissom's Department Store. From 1947 until 1957, Roy worked for West Texas Utilities as a sales representative. From 1957 until 1963, Roy sold furniture for D & W Furniture Company. In 1963, Roy started his career in the insurance business with Southwest Service Life Insurance Company. During his thirty-year insurance career, he was an insurance broker for numerous insurance companies and at his retirement, he worked for Humana Health Services. Roy was an active member of Fairmont United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees for several terms. Roy retired in Abilene and spent countless, happy hours entertaining family and friends and greatly enjoyed all outdoor activities. Roy was an accomplished carpenter and an avid reader - particularly non-fiction and fiction writings pertaining to the American West. Roy will be remembered for his sense of humor as well as his outgoing and friendly personality to his family and lifelong friends.

Roy was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Kay Burk.

Roy is survived by his wife Eloise, daughter Cheryl McCoy-Davis (Gary), son Thomas McCoy (Kimberly), granddaughter Stacy Parker (John), and grandson Travis Burk.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and acknowledge the service of all care givers who cared for Roy in his final months.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Roy's memory can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
