Archie Dean McFarland turned 85 years old on June 15. Dean passed away June 26 at home with the love of his life by his side.
Dean was born June 15, 1931, to Archibald Charles McFarland and Alice Anderson Erickson McFarland in Heman, Idaho. The following year younger brother Laddie Gean joined the family. Dean grew up playing with L. Gean and the Winegar boys, swimming in the canal, swinging in the old barn, playing mumble peg with their pocket knives and playing marbles.
At the age of 6, Dean's father passed away, leaving Dean, his older brother Bob, and L. Gean to be the men of the house, taking care of their farm and helping their mother.
Dean started with his first job at the age of 10 stomping hay for a neighbor, and continued working the land and farming throughout the remainder of his life.
Dean joined the Navy in 1950, serving for four years. He loved serving his country and always had stories to share. In 1951, while on leave, Dean and Karlene Bratsman started dating. They were married March 11, 1954, in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At that time Dean and Karlene decided she would stay at home and work until Dean was discharged, but that didn't last long; they couldn't wait to start their life together in San Diego, where Dean finished his enlistment.
Dean loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and his family. Dean had many callings in the church and enjoyed each of them. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. Oh, how he will be missed!
Dean and Karlene had the wonderful adventure of raising five children, Margo Jackson (Gary), of Roberts; Darris (Todd), of Twin Falls; Kirby (Nan), of LaBelle; Justin (Teresa), of LaBelle; and Jaren (Sherri), of Seattle, Washington.
Dean loved to fish. He could often be found sitting at the lake with a Pepsi in hand and two fishing poles cast out. Dean and Karlene loved taking their family camping, fishing, picnicking, swimming in the canal, picking huckleberries and just being together.
Dean is survived by his sweetheart, Karlene; his children; his grandchildren; his great-grandchildren and his brother L. Gean.
He is proceeded in death by his parents; grandson Jonathan Dean McFarland; sisters Edna, Grace, Eva and Selma; and brother Bob.
Dean and family want to thank all those who have helped them these last months.
