Frank Date Obituary

Frank

DATE

Frank Date, a longtime resident of Reno, passed quietly away on June 15, 2008 after a short illness. He was born in Delhi, CA on July 29, 1922. For several years Frank and Maybel owned the American Fish Market. Frank retired from the fish business in 1965 and went to work for the City of Reno in the Paint and Sign Department. He retired after 20 years and celebrated with a month-long fishing trip to Alaska. Frank was an avid fisherman and hunter. He spent may seasons teaching family and friends the fine points of outdoor sportsmanship and camping.

Frank's favorite wintertime hobby was baking a varied assortment of cookies which he lovingly shared with family, friends, friends of friends, and even those he didn't know. Frank's cookies garnered raves of appreciation, delight, and amazement. His cookies have been enjoyed from coast to coast as well as Hawaii, Japan, Canada, and Australia. Frank was active in the Boy Scouts of America (leader for Troop 4 for several years and was honored with a Silver Beaver Award), Knights of Pythias, Elks, founding member of the Reno JACL, and honorary member of the Reno Fire Fighters Union Local 731.

Preceding him in death were his parents Chukichi Date and Masa Okada; siblings Ruth Takeuchi (Berkeley, CA), Takashi Date (Turlock, CA), and Keiji Date (Reno, NV). He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Maybel; children Kenneth, Sharon, Alan, and Curtis; and granddaughters Sarah and Nicole.

A family viewing is scheduled with no scheduled funeral services. A celebration of Frank's life is being planned for a later date. The family invites you to share a thought, memory, or condolence message in the family guestbook at the website www.waltonsfuneralhomes.com

Some of my fondest childhood memories involve the Date family:Japanese-American picnic and or course the Boy Scout barbeque. Franks generousity and smiling face will forever be a part of my happiest thoughts.

Maybel - Rosita and I have you and your family in our thoughts and prayers. It was good to see you and Frank last year - baking cookies and talking about the old Scout Days. How can I ever forget crawling underneath your house looking for camping equipment, or when Frank visited me while on Staff at Camp Fleischmann back in '67. God bless you - with all our Love - Chris and Rosita and Franklin

Maybel and Family. I am saddened to learn of Frank's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I will always cherish the fond memories of the elk/deer hunting, fishing trips and the days with the City of Reno. I considered Frank a true friend and a Man among Men.

Mrs. Date, just a quick note to say my thoughts are with you and your children at this time. I will always remember Frank with the Boy Scouts and all that I learned from him. I know he is with Hancock, Lemons and my dad!! I had the best time with him to the National Jamboree in Idaho in 1973. All of us with Troop 4 will never forget him! I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn from him while growing up in Reno and in the scout program. I can still see him out painting the streets early in the morning as I am coming in from the night before. He always had a kind word and a piece of wisdom to pass along. I send my sincerest condolences and my prayers are with you all. I am sure you can be strong at this trying time.

Dear Maybel and kids, I am truly sorry to hear of Frank's passing. I visited with Curtis on Thursday morning. I believe that Frank is in the presense of the Great Scoutmaster in the Sky.
My association with your family has been a blessing to me and my wife. I am only so thankful, that in 2006 when I was in Reno I was able to spend an hour or so with Frank, just catchin up. 1969 to present is a long time friendship, one I will always treasure.
May God bless each one of you the rest of your lives.
