Janet E. Romans, 79, of Nickerson, passed away August 16, 2015, at Fremont Health in Fremont.
Janet Elaine Opfer was born on January 5, 1936, in the home of her parents, Ellen (Willcock) and Fredrick Opfer near Aurora, Nebraska. During her youth she lived in Henderson, McCool, Hampton, Fontenelle, and Arlington, Nebraska. She was the oldest of seven children. She was a member at one time of Immanuel Lutheran Church near Hooper, St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of Arlington, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont, Nebraska. Her grade school days were spent at Hampton, Fontenelle, and St. Paul's. She was confirmed in 1949 at St. Paul's. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1953. She went to summer school for three summers at Wayne State College. She started teaching school in the fall of 1953 at the Thone School near Herman, Nebraska, for one year and taught three years at the Lincoln School near Orum, Nebraska, in Washington County.
Janet married Victor A. Romans on December 1, 1956, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Arlington. They moved to Fremont where Jennette Gladys was born on July 5, 1957. Janet stayed home for three years to care for her. She then went back to teaching at District 22 near Hooper, Nebraska for three years. She became a substitute teacher for Dodge County for two years. She then taught Garden City School, District 4, at the edge of Fremont for 15 years while attending Midland Lutheran College at night and summers to finally graduate in 1978 with a Bachelor of Education Degree. While in Fremont she was president of the Women's Auxiliary of the volunteer fire department and the Red Cross for the City of Fremont.
Janet and her husband decided to relocate to Reno, Nevada, in September of 1979. She worked for the Harrah's Casino and Hotel in the gift shop for seven years and then in the Personnel Office for 13 1/2 years, retiring in 2000 and moved to Winston, Oregon.
While retired she enjoyed gardening, raising many flowers, fishing, shooting and visiting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor A. Romans; daughter, Jennette McGrew; parents, Ellen and Fredrick Opfer; sister, Audrey Shockey; and brother, Marvin Opfer.
She is survived by her brothers, Mertin Opfer, Larry Opfer and Dallas Opfer; sister, Beverly Opfer; grandchildren, Jamie (Peter) Geaghan, Jeremy (Angela) Honeywell, Angel (Joseph) Giarraffa, Chanda (Nicholas) Goodsell, Ellen McGrew, and Shance McGrew; son-in-law, Daniel McGrew; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 19th at 10:00A.M. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Arlington with Pastor Rick Kanoy officiating.
Burial will take place at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery.
