Josephine MacNeil Obituary

Josephine "Dodie" Catherine MacNeil

Reno - Josephine "Dodie" Catherine MacNeil passed away peacefully on January 29, 2021 at The Seasons Nursing Home in Reno, Nevada. She was the only surviving child of John D. Capstick and Sarah (Brown) Capstick of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Dodie was the soulmate and devoted wife to John "Yi" MacNeil who passed away just seven weeks before his loving wife. Dodie was an endearing mother to Danny, Frankie, Johnny and Craig. She was also a loving grandmother to Lindsay, William, Michael and Cynthia and a great-grandmother to Aries and Landon.

Dodie retired from her career as an educator for Hug High School in Reno. She was an avid reader and liked to travel, making many lifelong friendships along the way. Every year her most loved adventure was going home to the place of her birth. This is when she and Yi made the yearly road trip from Reno to Capstick, Nova Scotia towing the fifth wheel.

Dodie's husband Yi and children Frankie, Johnny and Craig preceded her in death as did her parents, sisters Mary "Mimi" and Theresa "Sa" and her brother Frank who died in WWII. She is survived by her son Danny, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dodie was a lifelong member of Saint Theresa of the Little Flower Roman Catholic Church in Reno; all those who knew her will miss her presence.

Thank you to the all the staff at The Seasons Nursing Home for their professionalism, care and compassion for Dodie, and a heartfelt thank you to JoAnne McKnight for her enduring friendship, empathy and wisdom during the length of Dodie's illness and beyond.

Dodie will be cremated and laid to rest at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Reno. A service will not be held at this time due to COVID-19 restrictions.

My precious grandma Dodie, I will cherish all the memories as far as I can remember being around 5. You had the warmest heart & I will never forget the sound of your sweet voice, it’s something that always sticks in my mind. You used to bring me to work with you at hugs high school. You were my very best friend. Yi & yourself would always make me laugh because you two were so darn cute together. The smell of your house was always the same & such a comforting scent. I’m so happy you got to meet & spend time with Landon before you left us. Say hello to my daddy Johnny up there. ❤ I will forever cherish you in my heart & soul. May you rest now. Love your Cindy & Landon.

Grandma Dodie's presence in my life will be greatly missed. She had the sweetest, most gentle heart and I will cherish my memories with her always... the times we spent together, our letters and the many conversations thoughout the years. May she rest now with Grandpa Yi, her sisters, Aunt Mimi and Sa, my Father, Frank, her other dear sons, Uncle Johnny and Craig, all of her precious doggies, and the many other loved ones she's lost along the way. You will live forever in my heart and thoughts... love always, your Lindsay Lou ❤❤❤

My memory of dodie was when I was pregnant with her first granddaughter and her son Johnny never told his mother that she was a grandmother until Cynthia was born and when he did tell her she almost fell to the floor with so much happiness.
