Leonard Mormando Obituary

Leonard "Lenny" Mormando

LEONARD "Lenny" MORMANDO

Lenny Mormando passed away peacefully April 7, 2015. He was born August 31, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York, to Italian immigrant parents. His first true love was baseball and in 1941 he signed to play with the Brooklyn Dodgers, later known as the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lenny served honorably in the US Navy during WWII. He spent most of his service in the Pacific Theater, participating in such famous battles as Guadalcanal and Okinawa. After the war, he married Marian Swenson and they had two children. He later married JoAnn Wood. In 1957 Lenny and his family moved to Lake Tahoe and like so many others, fell in love with the "Lake" and the "Sierras". From the 1950's to the 1990's Lenny thrived at the "Lake" and became one of its most liked and recognizable citizens. Lenny's congenial personality fit perfectly with the resort hospitality business that anchored the Lake Tahoe community. Lenny quickly rose through the ranks to manage the top restaurants and entertainment venues of the era. Some of his positions over those years included: Manager "Harvey's Sage Room", Manager "Harvey's Top of the Wheel", Manager "Sahara Tahoe High Sierra Theater", Manager "Sahara Tahoe House of Lords" and Casino Host "Hyatt Lake Tahoe". During the late 1970's, Lenny was also the General Manager of the famous restaurant "Fior d' Italia" in San Francisco. Lenny was very appreciative of all the wonderful customers, friends and fellow employees he was able to meet and associate with while employed in the hospitality business at the "Lake" and San Francisco. Lenny's favorite hobby was golf where he became a pretty good "stick" and where his congenial personality made him a favorite in the foursome. Lenny spent most of his retirement years in Reno helping his family and generally improving the good natured feeling in and around the "Truckee Meadows".

Lenny is survived by his brother Daniel Mormando of New York, cousin Connie Pometto of New York, son Darrell Mormando of Nevada, daughter Nancy (Bob) Oleksy of Colorado, granddaughter Tiffany (Korey) Hall of Idaho, grandson Ryan (Jennifer) Oleksy of Okinawa, Japan, great grandchildren Sophia, Kasey and Jax Hall of Idaho, Michael and Thomas Oleksy of Okinawa, Japan, niece Karen (Jack) Klein of New York, nephew Dan (Michelle) Mormando of New York, step -granddaughter Gina (Mike) Coleman of Nevada, step -grandson Eric Fansler of Nevada and many wonderful friends. A memorial service was held in Meridian, Idaho on April the 10th. In lieu of flowers, a donation could be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Lenny made me a captain at the Top of the Wheel in the early seventies. He was a true gentleman, smart and kind. The kindness he showed me, the advice he gave me are with me even today. God speed Lenny
