Major Yenter Obituary

Major General (Ret) Mark William Yenter

Carson City - Major General (Ret) Mark William Yenter, 60, died suddenly of natural causes at his home in Carson City on May 25th. Mark was born into military service to Dorothy (Berger) of Carson City and Captain Kenneth Yenter of Fernley at the 98th General Hospital in Birkenfeld, Germany.

Raised under the Flag, Mark lived the life of a military family member in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Hawaii, Virginia and Carson City during the period his father was in Korea. He attended the University of Nevada in Reno and was President of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Through Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Mark found the love of his life, Lisa Talamo. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate of the ROTC program and in 1981 was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Engineers in the Regular Army. Following graduation from the Officer Basic Course and US Army Ranger School, Mark and Lisa were married and began their distinguished career of service to the Nation.

Assignments included parachute duty with 1-509 ABCT in Vicenza, Italy; multiple assignments in increasing levels of command and staff positions at Ft Bragg, NC with the 307th Engineers, 82nd Airborne Division, 27th Engineer Battalion, Delta Force and the 20th Engineer Brigade and the XVIII Airborne Corps. He was promoted to Brigadier General in the Capital Building in Carson City and went on to command the Pacific Ocean Division of Engineers and later commanded the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Ft Leonard Wood, Missouri. He served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, J3 for US Forces Korea and later retired from an assignment as the Deputy Chief of Engineers for the United States Army in June, 2017. Mark served multiple tours of combat duty in Bosnia-Herzogovina, Iraq, and Afghanistan and was highly decorated for his service in peace and war. He was a master parachutist and earned the Sapper and Ranger tabs, and was a Registered Professional Engineer from the State of Virginia with a Masters Degree in Water Management from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Throughout his life, Mark remained at heart a Son of Nevada. Battle Born, he retired with Lisa to their home in Carson City, where the views of Jack's Valley and the Sierras refreshed and restored him daily. He will join generations of his ancestors dating back to the Nevada Territory when he is buried with full military honors at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and brother Paul. He is survived by his wife Lisa; their daughter Lindsay (Karl) Swanson of Carlsbad, CA and their two sons Kaden William and Liam Mark Robert; their son Marcus of Carson City; brother Brad (Karey) Yenter of Carson City and their daughters Jamie and Cynthia; Paul's children Brandon and Rachel; sister Jane (Dan) Fitzgerald of Plano, TX and their children Laura, Jessica and John; as well as a great number of close relatives in Northern Nevada, California and across the United States.

A funeral service will be held for MG Yenter at the First Presbyterian Church in Carson City, Nevada on Saturday, 2 June at 1100, with interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to benefit any Wounded Warrior or Veterans support group in honor of Marks service to the Nation.

Dear Lisa, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as we remember your loving husband, Mark. He was a man of strength and duty behind that sweet American Apple Pie smile! Mark did so much for our military. We are so proud of all that was accomplished while you were both here at Fort Leonard Wood. You served as a beautiful First Lady and together, you and The Commander touched our hearts and our lives. May you continue to embrace Gods presence and comfort. The presence of the Lord will always be with you.

I was fortunate enough to have known and worked with Mark when he was assigned as Assistant Project Manager at Bonneville Lock and Dam. I counted him as one of the finest gentlemen I have ever known. Years after he left Bonneville he returned when he was promoted to Brigadier General. I still have the coin he gave me. He will be missed. My deepest condolences to Major General Mark Yenter's family, military family and friends. I am a friend and recent former co-worker of his brother, Brad, and he would share with me stories on several occasions (throughout the years) about his brother, his character, his accomplishments and valor. Brad knew my father was 42 years military man and he knew how much I respect and honor the men and women who so selflessly serve our great nation and so he knew how much I enjoyed hearing his stories about Mark. I wish I could have met him. My admiration extends most assuredly to his wife, Lisa and their children as well. My prayers of comfort are with you all.

Shocked and saddened by MG Yenter's passing. He was an amazing leader, and I was proud to work for him during his last assignment at USACE. He was a good man in every regard, and the finest of leaders and public servants. May God grant Lisa and his family peace and solace.

June 3, 2018

Lisa, I am truly sorry to hear of Mark's sudden passing. I very much regret not attending a military promotion some years ago for which I received an invitation as Laurie and I had not seen you and Mark since our UNR days. Unfortunately, I had an out of town court appearance on the day of his funeral. The best part of life is spending time with those who mean the most to us and the memories we take from that. I am sorry that the two of you were denied many more of those memories together. I had great respect for Mark and I'm not surprised he excelled as a husband, a father and in his career. Our thoughts are with you and the rest of your family.

I'm deeply saddened to learn of Mark's passing. We attended UNR Army ROTC and the basic paratrooper training together. While stationed in Heidelberg I met Mark, Lisa and all the UNR Officer's stationed in Europe at Lake Chiemsee to celebrate Oktoberfest 1982. Mark was already establishing himself in a way that he and Lisa were going places. I always thought of Mark as a true friend.

I remember having a super fun dinner at your house at Fort Leonard Wood. You made the BEST pasta sauce and we did a British tradition of ring a bell and change dinner partners. You two were so in love and beloved by all we met. Bob and I left saying what a great party it was and that we would steal your party idea. I tried making that sauce, Mark said it needed plenty of red wine. That's the only part I got right... I can't believe both Mark and Bob are gone, that memory is a blessing. My heart breaks for you. You should have had many more years left together. Much love to you! Jill

MG Mark Yenter was a great man. I had the honor to work for him in the 307th. To this day, his saying still rings in my mind , "Look at me, the hands of a surgeon and look at the tools I was given." Always made me laugh. Thank you, Sir. I appreciate the mentorship and leadership. God Bless!

It was an honor to serve with Gen. Yenter in Afghanistan back in the 2010 - 2012 timeframe. He was a skilled leader and a decent human being. We solved a problem or two on occasion, over a good cigar. May he rest in God's Peace with prayers for his family.

I had the opportunity to serve with MG (Ret) Yenter, while serving as the J3 Operations Officer, US Forces Korea (USFK). Mark was an engineer by trade and brought his tremendous skills and fantastic personality to a very challenging assignment. I remember him as easily to approach with challenging issues, witty, kind, and warm hearted with a great sense of humor. Plus, Mark was a regular guy and always had time for friends, family and the community. I heard Mark passed away from a dear friend and a South Korean General Officer, who served alongside Mark. Simply stated ... Mark's passing is a loss to our nation and to our South Korean partners. Mark will be always remembered and god bless to his family as Mark makes his way to heaven. Simple - Mark is a great man and will be missed. Thanks for your contributions to making our nation great!!! God Bless and peace be with you my friend!

I'm floored. MG Yenter preceeded us in Iraq as the MNCI C-7, and with such a good reputation.
I later met him at the 2012 MEB Commander's Conference and was so impressed at the ease that
he mixed with the MEB Commanders and CSMs, grafted in combat ops from Afghanistan, stressed
solid leadership, and just mixed professionalism with a good spirit. We had a beer conversation
one night while there that bore my last publication as a military green-suiter on basecamps. I still have
and use that book and tell that story that shows his brilliance as an officer, leader and person.
I wish God's peace on his family and community..
Essayons forever Sir..

It was really good to have Mark back in Nevada. I only saw Mark twice in the last 35 years, but it was just like old times when I did see him, as if no time had gone by. Mark was a brother and friend that you always knew had your back. He proved that again and again in his decorated career in the military. We are very happy we got to spend the little time we had with him since he retired. He was ready to jump back into action in supporting his old fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, where he will be missed by all of his brothers.
Lisa, I'm truly sorry for your loss, and we are all here to support you. Mark is truly in his final destination now, where we will all have the honor of joining him one day. God Bless you Lisa and your family.
