Richard Berg Obituary

Richard Leslie Berg

Caldwell - Richard Leslie Berg, age 92, of Caldwell, Idaho, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2021 at Garden Valley View Assisted Living in Boise, Idaho.

Richard was born to Ernest and Cora Berg on April 26, 1928. He was raised on the family farm on Mosher Hollow Road in Cattaragus, New York. He was the fifth of five children, three brothers and two sisters, all of whom have preceded Richard in death. His mother was Cora Fern Spire, a member of the Eddy Family of America. Many stories were told of Richard's distant relative, William Eddy, the first man to walk out of the Sierra Nevada and alert the world to the Donner Party Tragedy of 1847.

Richard was introduced to Ellen Charlotte Harrison by a friend. They were married on April 16, 1947. Richard and Ellen left the cold and snow of upstate New York and migrated to Red Bluff, California in 1958. Five children and a wife in tow, he drove across the country, giving him a chance to do what he loved most, driving and looking at the country everywhere.

Richard began his new life in Red Bluff, California as a janitor at Jackson High School. In 1965, he bought his first Shell Service Station. The service station at Oak and Main in Red Bluff provided a great place for his kids to grow up. Mom kept the books, and was now raising six children with the addition of Leslie Ann in 1967.

Richard was an outdoorsman who loved hunting pheasants, doves, deer, bear and elk. The Sacramento River provided great King Salmon and Steelhead fishing. He traveled all over the west, always reading and dreaming of a new adventure.

He transferred to a new Shell Gas Station in Sparks, Nevada in 1978. Twenty happy years went by too quick and in 1998, Richard and Ellen retired, then moved to Caldwell, Idaho to be close to their granddaughters, Nickole and Veronica D'Alessio. Ellen passed away on August 8, 2006, after 59 years of marriage. After Ellen's death, Richard continued to look after Nickole and Veronica with whom he shared a special and deeply loving bond.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Cora; sister, Beatrice; and brothers, Gordon and Laurence.

He is survived by his sons; Richard (Michele) Berg Jr., Dennis Frank (Olivia) Berg, Dale Gordon (Linda) Berg, Gary Berg, and Edward Berg; daughter, Leslie Ann (Robert) Wilkerson; and eleven grandchildren.

We are are saddened to hear of the loss of our friend and mentor, Dick Berg. Dick’s Shell station at Main and Oak will be remembered as a favorite gathering place. One of my favorite stories ... One morning, Dick was in the office. reclining in his roll-around chair. Terry Newport, Ed Skaggs and I were all in the office with Dick, laughing about some town happening. A gentleman stepped up to the open door and asked for the boss. We pointed to Dick, and the fellow asked if he could get a lube, oil and filter change, plus some other service-related items done that day. Dick quietly told him that he was “just too busy.” We looked at the prospective customer, whose mouth was open but not saying a word as he looked at this unoccupied group. He turned and left as the laughter resumed with gusto. Just one of many wonderful memories, of wonderful times together! Dick and Ellen have been missed since they left Red Bluff! ...
