Staff Sergeant Sean Michael Gaul, 29, of Cresco, IA, was killed in action January 9, 2008 in Sinsil, Iraq. Sean was born June 25, 1978 to Christine M. Minear and Michael F. Gaul. He moved to the Reno area as a child in 1985. He attended local schools and was a member of JROTC at Reed High School. He joined the US Army in November, 1999. He was a career soldier first serving with B Co., 1/505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, and 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC. He then transferred to a Stryker Brigade at Ft. Lewis, WA and currently was stationed in Vilseck, Germany as a Recon Platoon Squad Leader. He attended Ranger School, sniper school, and was also trained as a paramedic. This was his 5th deployment.

Sean was a very enthusiastic athlete. He trained in kenpo, aikido and ninjitsu. He ran many races, participated in triathlons, biked, swam, and loved to hike. He loved the outdoors.

Sean was a family man. Married in June 2000, he is survived by his wife, Jessica L. H. Gaul and daughter. His love for work was second only to his joy while being home. He will also be missed by his mother; father; four sisters; three grandparents; seven uncles; nine aunts; numerous cousins; much family and many friends. An incredible man and grandfather Irvin J. Minear and cherished baby boy Ian Michael Gaul precede him in death.

Dear Brother,

I am remembering you on this day. 11 years have passed and your memory is still as bright as ever. I watched the Queen Freddie Mercury movie last night and it made me think of you. Maybe you were around? You introduced me to Queen and so many other great musicians. You did many things. You made a great impact. I love you. I'll see you on the other side.

To the family and friends of Sean,

I am truly sorry for your loss, I suffer myself from that same loss. Sean was my Squad Leader in 2005 at Ft Lewis, when he was my Sqaud Leader till Jan 09 we remained friends. He use to catch my Wife and I togather before we got married and never said a word. We enjoyed conversation about past experiences when he was in the 82nd and I was with the 1st Ad in Fallujah. Always a good guy always cared and took care of his soldiers. Always a man I wanted to be like and played a pivital role in who I am as a NCO today. I remember the day I found out about what happened and tried to get to the memorial, but was denied due to helo space. I still regret not making it brother and will love you for eternity. You will never be forgotten.

I represent PRAYER SHAWLS 4 FALLEN SOLDIERS (PS4FS), an organization that since October 2007 has sent over 2,800 prayer shawls to military families who have lost a loved one. We are an organization of over 240 groups from all over the country. We make every effort to reach families even when post cards are returned after they have moved. Would you kindly send me a contact email/address so that we may send a loving hand-made prayer shawl to the family? Thank you!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Sean, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

In loving memory of SSg Sean Michael Gaul.
My son, Sgt Jayson Trawick 1Plt H Co 3/2 SCR was lead by Sean, in his early training and it is because him that my son is alive today. His leadership, training and courage taught so many young men to be better soldiers. He touched so many lives. As the 3/2 SCR is about to turn home to Germany I wanted to say thank you. For your Hero is also so many young soldiers and their families Hero too. It is with deepest sympathy that I express my thoughts and prayer with you.
SSg Sean M. Gaul will never be just another name on the wall for he is in the hearts of every soldier, friend and family that ever know him.
May you feel his love and the love of our Father in Heaven.

I went to sniper school with Ssg. Gaul in germany, and I just want to say how sorry I am for your loss. I did not know him for more than a little over a month, but he was one of those people that you could immediately respect and see that he was a genuinely good person. He was a really awsome guy and it was inspiring to be around him. I cannot begin to comprehend what you are going through at this time, but my thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the Gaul family,

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Seans' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

I can't even find the words...I lost my 19 year old son--5 Sept 2007, Balad, Iraq. I am absolutely devastated and I know that you are too...but find comfort in the fact that we will see our loved ones, our heroes again. Do I wish that I could trade places with my son? ABSOLUTELY not. He is in the arms of our Lord--"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away" ~Rev 21:4

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I would also like to tell you about a website,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

Sean, Shannon and Craig, a friendship of blessings and only a loss if it had never been. As Craig's Mom I saw these three who went from boyhood to men share laughter and smiles to be treasured forever. In your honer Sean, they are stronger because of you. It is said to cry when a baby is born and rejoice when one goes home to their eternal reward which seems backwards to us here. We know we will see you again. With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Staff Sergeant Gaul. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Society, Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and the more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. This precious life, lived and lost in love of America, epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… the family of one of America's best ...!!!

My deepest empathy and condolences. Below is a poem that perhaps will ease the burden of grief in knowing Sean is not far...will never be forgotten...and will be held in our hearts and gratitude forever.
Death is nothing at all...I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Pray, smile, think of me - let my name be ever the household word that I always was, let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it every meant. It is the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well.
