September 25, 1921 - November 29, 2014
Our friend Selwyn Jones passed away in the early morning of November 29, 2014 at the age of 93. From his humble beginnings as an East Texas farm boy, he became an artist, an educator, a political activist, and a World War II veteran. A dedicated atheist, he was happiest when arguing leftist politics with anyone who would dare take him on. He was a regular attendee of the San Francisco Opera, Symphony and Ballet for over 50 years. He was a world traveler who loved France and Italy, but who called the Bay Area home for 60 years. Above all, he was a friend to many of us who now mourn his passing. A celebration of Selwyn's life will be held in January. For information, please contact Jenn McAleer at [email protected]. Anyone wishing to remember Selwyn with a donation, please consider giving to Openhouse, 1800 Market Street, PMB 93, San Francisco, CA 94102. Openhouse provides an array of outreach and support services to LGBT Seniors. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Selwyn was my second cousin; my mother's first cousin. They were born one day apart. They were close as adolescents. Any friends of his who would like to contact his extended family may do so through me.

Will miss U

I talked to Selwyn mid-November after reading his book. I had planned to visit next month to reminisce with him and suggest a few corrections for his second printing. When I tried to call and got a message that his phone had been disconnected I feared the worst and called the police. They checked on him and called with the sad news. We had been friends since the early 50s when he and Randy lived in Houston. I'm saddened by his passing, but more disappointed in not getting to visit and talk more about his book.
