Thomas Zeitvogel Obituary

Thomas Jacob Zeitvogel

Thomas Jacob Zeitvogel completed his journey to Heaven with "anticipatory joy" while at home with his loving family by his side on Saturday, March 5, 2016, after a seven month long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob Zeitvogel and Cecilia Hecht, and three of his children; Theresa Ann, Kevin Mark, and Eric Paul. He is survived by his wife of almost 57 years, Sue, and his sons; Jeffrey and Alan, three daughters-in-law; Holly, Carol, and Karen, five granddaughters, one grandson, three great-granddaughters, and 3 great-grandsons.

Tom enlisted into the United States Air Force on August 12, 1955. He completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt on September 22, 1961. He retired from active duty service with the rank of Lt. Col. on July 1, 1980.

As a Catholic, Tom was a 3rd Order Lay Carmelite for over 60 years, and was instrumental in establishing many Lay Carmelite communities. He wrote three formation manuals which are used in communities around the world. Tom was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and had been an active member of the Knights for over 50 years. He especially took pride in being the Color Corps Commander. He was also active in different church choirs, where he first met Sue. Tom was also a Lay Eucharistic Minister and Lector.

During his many years of Scouting with his four sons, he was known as "Mr. Z". He served in many capacities over the years to include Committee Chairman, Cubmaster and Scoutmaster, providing a very strong and positive influence in the lives of hundreds of young men, and their development into leaders and strong citizens. He was very proud that all of his sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

Travelling was a favorite activity shared by Tom and Sue, both internationally on pilgrimages, or RV-ing in their fifth wheel across the United States. They especially enjoyed the time spent camping with their new friends in the "Reno Renegades".

Visitation will be on Monday, March 14, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Ross, Burke & Knobel Funeral Home, 2155 Kietzke Lane, Reno, NV with Rosary service at 7:00 p.m.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2900 N. McCarran Blvd., Sparks, NV. Burial with military honors will be at 2:00 p.m. at the Northern Nevada Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, 14 Veterans Way, Fernley, NV.

At both Tom and Sue's request, please do not wear anything black, as this is a celebration of his life and his joyous family reunion in Heaven. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity in his name.

The family would especially like to thank St. Mary's Hospice for their helpful and concerned care, and the crews from the Truckee Meadows Fire Station on East Lake Drive for always coming to our aid when needed. Heartfelt thanks to all the family and friends from around the world for their prayers and love.

As a Carmelite, I remember and admire Tom's personal drive to build the understanding and practice of Carmel among its members in Washoe County. As he did so, he published his voluminous discussion in large binders he distributed to the members for formation. As I now contemplate the training, I appreciate that Tom could have done what many rigorous Third Order Carmelites have done and join the OCS. He stood where he started and made it better.

I knew Tom as an electronics officer stationed in Tin City, Alaska in 1964. He was my friend and close associate for the six months we were stationed together, KL7FDB was his call sign and he always got an answer to a CQ, Everyone wanted to chat with Alaska on the Bering Strait! We met again in California, Just by coincidence, we both ended up in the Bay Area. Kind of lost touch until a few years ago when we started trading Christmas cards. Didn't get one this year and looked to see why. I'm so sad we did not see each other one more time. Tom will have a special place up there. A wonderful, giving life devoted to Him and a very full measure of suffering. Tom, please put in a good word for me, I know you have His ear.
Your Alaska buddy,
Jim Mulholland

Oh Tom. I don't know what to say. I have been lost for years on this dark night of the soul. God has been calling me back to him lately. I wanted to talk to you about the past long while. Thank you for helping me and Randy become Third Order Carmites. Thank you for listening to me and encouraging me to write to the bishop. I'm sorry it took me so long. I'll miss you. Jean

I never had the pleasure of meeting him face to face, but had the pleasure of speaking to him in great depths about my home town Yerrington Nevada. Upon calling our office one day regarding his burial spaces here at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral home. I heard stories of the Railroad, his children and his great travels. It's funny how paths cross in life and what you really do have in common with a stranger. But he became my friend, and would call from time to time to say Hello and asked how I was and when he got to Florida he would stop and we would have lunch. I will treasure those conversations and his tales. RIP Tom Z.

So sorry for your loss. I'm not sure if we ever met face to face but I worked in a cemetery in Orlando that he had past dealings with, so we spoke a number of times over the years. He's been on my mind lately, now I know why. I do know the love he had for his family was always a topic of discussion with him. I feel blessed for knowing him. God Bless you!

I am grateful to Tom for his friendship and for all he did for the Lay Carmelites. He was devoted to Carmel and Our Lady and this was evident in the way he lived. May we follow his example.

Condolences to the family! Welcome to your new eternal life Tom; I recalled the days when we first met in Aylesford Great Britain back in 1991, also when we walked down the streets of Rome years ago. Pray for us from up above; bon voyage Tom!

I am thankful to have been formed by this stalwart man of Carmel, who brought depth and clarity to the formation of Third Order Carmelites around the world with his voluminous formation program. I am thankful for the many years of fellowship with Tom, who was a man of deep wisdom and moral fiber, as well as good humor. He will be deeply missed among our 4th Degree Knights.

March 10, 2016

I will so miss Tom's e-mails and occasionally a phone call from my high school friend. We only had 11 in our graduation class so we were all close. Ours was the last class before they centralized to Byron-Bergen High School. God Bless you and now you are at peace. Nancy Brownell Class of 51.
