David E. Matson Jr.

1957 - 2026

David E. Matson Jr., 68, of Ridgway, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Mt. Nittany Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

He was born on August 14, 1957, in Ridgway, the son of the late David E. Sr. and Helen M. Shoff Matson.

On August 26, 1978, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, he married Susan Johnson, who survives.

David graduated from Ridgway High School, Class of 1975, and dedicated the next 43 years of his life to working at SGL Carbon. In addition to his contributions in his professional life, David was deeply committed to serving his community. For 25 years, he worked with the Ridgway Ambulance, providing critical assistance in times of need. His passion for service extended to the Ridgway Fire Department, where he was an active member for over 40 years.

In his free time, David found joy in cooking, cherished watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, and had a deep love for the beach, particularly enjoying trips to the Outer Banks. His warm spirit and hearty laughter will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife of nearly 48 years, he is survived by 4 daughters: Sara James and her husband Josh of Franklin, Amie Matson of Johnsonburg, Morgan Matson of Ridgway, and Emily Matson of Ridgway, 1 grandson, David, a mother-in-law, Marla Johnson, and his beloved dog, Bert. He is also survived by a sister, Terry Nussbaum and her husband Skip of Hanover, a brother, Joseph Matson and his wife Melody of Harrisburg, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Darkiss Crown, a brother, John Matson, and his father-in-law, Donald Johnson.

A Celebration of life will be announced on a later date.
