My grandparents were very good friends with Allen Roberts (my grandmother was 93 years old when she passed away). My family (the Weymouth's lived down-the-lake from the Robert's camp (for 17 years) and we were one of the few families that lived on the lake year round. We loved the summer months when families returned to their summer retreats. My memories are faint; however, I remember Allen Roberts because he was so kind and patient with children.

Allen W. Roberts -- "Mr. Roberts" to us when we were in school, but "Allen" when we grew up -- had a profound influence on my life, not only as Principal and Superintendent of Schools, but also as friend. His acts of kindness were the embodiment of Albert Schweitzer's philosophy of "reverence for life". I remember Allen putting a band aid on my knee when I fell on the playground in kindergarten (I still have a scar and love it because it reminds me of him). On Green Lake, he taught me to swim and paddle a canoe. As a rather avuncular figure, he taught us by example. There never was a more kind, honest, and decent soul. This earth is a better place because of him. May he rest in peace.

Allen W. Roberts - without whom New Providence, NJ would not have the fine education foundation that it has today.

Allen W. Roberts - without whom families that went to "Camp" at Sunset Lodge at Green Lake, Maine would have never met and gained the fond family memories or formed the bonds of friendship that started around 1940 and continue today and even grow as new "Campers" find the jewel of Green Lake, Maine.

Allen W. Roberts - thanks for teaching me how to swim and for the honor of being my friend and especially for all the history you imparted to all that have known you.

Remembering Allen

Allen as he always insisted I call him since I tried Uncle Allen & Mr. Roberts trying to be respectful but he always said: “no no call me Allen”. I am sad that he is no longer with us but feel fortunate that I got to know him and spend some really special time with him. He was always the educator not as a disciplinarian but more of a guide about how to live life in a kind and fulfilling way. For instance he would always let women and children get their food first at any gathering. And something I always do now is leaving a rest room cleaner than I find it. These are just a sample of some of the many acts of kindness he would practice. Just being around him would make anyone want to emulate him in some way. He had an infectious spirit and a zest for life. Well at least now he can once again dive into that water in heaven and say “good old Green Lake”. Allen you will be missed but memories of you will live for ever in those you touched…..I am one of them.

"May his memory be as sweet as the rose and as lasting as the evergreen"

I will always remember his smile and his gentle spirit as he was an amazing person.
