Ann Meriwether Smothers Gill

Ann Meriwether Smothers Gill, who dedicated much of her working life to education, maritime history and community service, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, in Hardy, Va. Born on November 23, 1937, in Roanoke, Va., Ann embarked on a remarkable journey that would see her leave an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to cross her path. She was the daughter Thomas A. and Mary Gordon Weck Smothers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Dew Gill. They married on May 20, 1965 and shared 47 extremely happy years together.

Her academic pursuits started at Stetson University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She furthered her education at the University of Virginia, where she earned a Master's Degree in Education. With that as a foundation, Ann devoted herself to the field of education, serving for two years as Principal for the Roanoke County Schools. Her career in education continued as Science Editor for Harcourt, Brace and World, in New York City. Ann then took on the role of Supervisor of Science Education for the Manhasset Public Schools, on Long Island, NY. Three years later, she became Curator of Education at the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor, NY., a position which led, five years later, to the prestigious position of Executive Director, which she held for the following 15 years.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ann found joy in many personal interests that were a fundamental part of her vibrant spirit and sense of exploration and adventure. As a wildlife enthusiast and nature lover in general, she travelled extensively to destinations including Costa Rica, Hawaii, Africa, The Amazon, Alaska, and Nova Scotia. Closer to home, she loved sailing on Long Island Sound with her husband, Tom and children Tom, Meriwether and Mary Gordon. Most summer weekends, you would find them on their sailing boat, Virginian gunkholing secluded coves and bays looking for those perfect anchorages and beaches. Ann's hobbies also included the intricate art of needlework, particularly hook rugs, which showcased her creativity. Gardening was another passion, she filled her gardens with a wide variety of beautiful flowers, including roses, lilies, and orchids, which were some of her favorites. She also enjoyed cooking and bringing friends and family together for special occasions.

Ann was a proud member of The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) since 1957, honoring her heritage while making substantial contributions to her community. Throughout these years, she was affiliated to the Ketewamoke Chapter on Long Island, NY and the Nancy Christina Fleming Chapter in Roanoke, Va. Her dedication to her community was recognized when she received the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Huntington League of Women Voters in 1995, in addition to the Outstanding Community Service Award for the Town of Huntington, NY in 2000, a testament to her commitment to civic engagement.

Ann's legacy is one of kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity, which will always be remembered by all of those who knew her. She was also a loving mother and grandmother who doted on her family and inspired them by her example. She will be deeply missed, and her spirit will continue to inspire future generations.

She is survived by her children, Thomas Dew Gill, Jr. and wife, Kathleen, Meriwether Winston Gill and husband Rupert, Mary Gordon Enslow and husband, Roy as well as her grandchildren, Piper Evelyn Gill and Meriwether Savannah Skye Pilkington.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Christ Church, Kingston Parish Cemetery with the Reverend Troy Keaton officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow services at the fellowship hall.
