Knew him in Jackson in the 60s. Concerned that Patty's mail has been returned. Has she died also?

Cliff was my oldest friend, as we were both in Graduate School at LSU Baton Rouge, LA, together in 1960. We shared mutual interests in shooting, gun collecting and books. When my career in the US Army and the Central Intelligence Agency was over Cliff helped me enter academic world. His recommendations were my entrance to LSU, and then American Military University. I regret deeply I was never able to accompany him on his African safaris. My deepest condolences to Patty and their children.

The discipline of sociology has suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Cliff Bryant. His leadership in promoting research and scholarship in the profession of sociology is unsurpassed, especially in the area of deviance. His research often led him to tread where other sociologists seldom chose to "travel" such as his work on carnival workers, poultry plant workers, users of bidets, and khaki crime in the military. Further, through his efforts of mentoring, many graduate students have gone on to successful and productive careers as sociologists. Finally, Cliff was recognized as an outstanding teacher at Virginia Tech, and elsehwere during his long career. After 49 years as a loyal colleague and friend, you shall be deeply missed.

Dr Bryant was not only my thesis advisor and mentor but a personal friend too, who helped me throughout my academic career at Virginia Tech.
I will never forget him for not only his mentorship, but for his great sense of humor as well.

Dr. Bryant was a scholar, friend and professional colleague. Knowing Cliff enriched my life both professionally and personally. Everything I wrote about Cliff in my letters in support of the awards he earned toward the end of his academic career were absolutely true and it was my pleasure to see his accomplishments acknowledged by his university and the professional organizations he served.

I never met Dr. Byant in person, but I was a fortunate beneficiary of his excellent professional skills as an editor of criminological works. I was happy to be invited by Dr. Bryant to work on his Encyclopedia of Criminology and Deviant Behavior. Through such works as well as other efforts for the professional community of criminologists --and their students-- Dr. Bryant will surely be well remembered.

Clif, I can't belive that when we talked this summer that it would be for the last time. I'm glad that I thanked you for all that you did for me. In the 18 years that I knew you you asked for so little and gave so much. Your name and recommendations opened so many doors for me; any success that I have had is primarily due to your efforts. You always seemed to have the right advice at critical times. I always loved your low-tech approach: writing emails on legal paper with pencil, having me type these messages into your email, and then printing out responses so that you could read them. Although never to your face we often called you the "Colonel" which we thought reflected the leadership role you played in everything in which you took part. You were the best, Clif!

My condolences to the family of this great man. Dr. Bryant was an extraordinary mentor and outstanding professor. He was so gracious and always ready to help students succeed. We coauthored an article together in the Journal of Deviant Behavior. I will always remember him as one of the most influential professors in my life.

Dear Cliff,

Knowing your extraordinary ability to have your presence felt by so many people in so many places at once, I know you'll be reading this...you had the most incredible impact on my life, both professionally and academically. I'm a better scholar today because of your insight and genuine concern for my advancement and success in the field of criminology. More importantly, I'm a better person and educator, in part because you taught me to have a passion and enthusiasm for the discipline that comes from the heart. Since my first day in the VT doctoral program 14 years ago, not a day has passed that I haven't quietly thanked you, appreciated you, or admired you. I've just now been informed of your passing, and this heaviness in my heart is overwhelming...without a doubt, you and your wife have been the most gracious, humble, and sincere couple I've ever had the privilege to know. I'll miss you dearly, Cliff...thank you for being one of the truly special people in my life.

To the family of Dr. Bryant,

Dr. Bryant was so extraordinary; a scholar and such a gentleman. He helped me publish an article that he solicited from a conference when I was completely inexperienced in that realm. He was so kind.

I am so sorry for your loss and I send you my prayers. Druann Heckert

Dear Patty,
You probably don't remember me but I took one of Cliff's classes when he was on Fulbright at Xavier University in the Philipines. I and others subsequently attended Virginia Tech where I worked for Cliff as a graduate assistant. I am currently a professor at Michigan State University. He will be sorely missed. He made a great contribution to the field and I can still remember his infectious enthusiasm on seemingly everything that he does. May God bless you and your family during this time of sorrow. I am keeping you in my prayers.
Sincerely, Sheila Royo Maxwell
