If I were not dependent upon others to drive me at the moment, I would be in Lexington to say goodbye to Don. He was a significant presence in my life during those formative high school and college years. In the spring of 1969, toward the end of my junior year of high school, he drove a friend and me to Lexington to visit W&L. Both my friend and I ended up going there, and Don was not timid about expressing his disdain when I mentioned that I was thinking of majoring in journalism. (When it was time to declare, I majored in English.) I shopped at both the College Town Shop, where friends of mine worked, and at the Stable here in Roanoke, where Don nudged me toward natural fabrics and traditional cuts of clothing. (We're talking about the late 1960's and early 1970's after all). During those days I was friends with his daughter Terry, and in adulthood I've become friends with her little sister Kelly. My condolences to the entire family over the loss of your patriarch. Don had a good, long run, and I appreciate the opportunity to have known him.
