Peter McGuire Obituary

Peter Gene McGuire

August 18, 1924 - January 9, 2025

On Thursday, January 9, 2025, Peter Gene McGuire, completed his earthly journey. He was 100 years old and had celebrated his last birthday heartily on August 18, 2024.

He was born in Clifton Forge, VA, and lived there until 1951, when he brought his young family to Roanoke. He spent his last two years in the Harmony Assisted Living community, where he remained happy and active.

Peter proudly served his country in World War II and was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1945. He worked for many years at Tidewater Supply Company, where he began as a store clerk and retired in 1989 as president of the company. Peter received his pilot's license after World War II, but he stopped flying after he scared the wits out of his new bride, Mildred.

He enjoyed traveling. He said his favorite trip was when he and Mildred spent 46 days driving around America after he retired. Peter enjoyed years of playing golf, fishing, dancing, cooking on his grill, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a steady and faithful Christian and lived his life as such.

In his later years, Heights Community Church became his place of worship. When asked recently what his life advice to others would be, he responded, "Be friendly and honest with all people." He had a positive attitude all his life. He accepted and loved all people, and he was an inspiration to his family.

Peter was preceded in death by many good friends and family members, including his parents, Kenneth and Ada McGuire, and his five siblings, Joe, Ruth, Kenneth, Robert, and Katie, and their spouses. In 2010, Mildred, his wife of 60 years passed away suddenly. They had been quite a team for many years while raising their children. Peter later married Marie Jamison, while living at Elm Park, until her passing in 2018. Peter was also preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Judy McGuire; a grandson, Patrick Blasiole; a daughter-in-law, Ann McGuire; and son-in-law, J.R. "Buck" Simmons Jr.

Left to celebrate Peter's well-lived life are his children, Cathy Schoester, Kenneth McGuire (Judy Carol), Marcia Simmons, and Laura Blasiole (Michael); and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Goelzer. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends for visitation at 1 p.m., on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Oakey's South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton Avenue in Roanoke, VA. A service will follow at 2 p.m., with Nelson Harris officiating. Peter will be buried and join Mildred and most of his family at the Mountain View Cemetery in Clifton Forge, VA, at 10 a.m., on Friday, January 17, 2025.

If so inclined, please make a donation in Peter's honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, The Bradley Free Clinic, or to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be shared with his family at www.Oakeys.com.

I am truly sorry for your loss, I remember back in the day as a child going there, I always felt welcomed he and his family were one of a kind. We spent many Christmas sipping egg now (mine no alcohol), sleigh riding in the field- until it became a subdivision and so many great times! Rest in peace

I was Pete's stylist while he lived at Elm Park. He was so kind and a true gentleman. I missed him when he left. Keeping the family in my prayers. So happy you had him for those many years.

Dearest Laura, Remembering all that you and your very dear parents meant to us when we first came to Cave Spring UMC. You were a fantastic youth leader and a precious mentor and friend to Samantha and Steve. Your Dad came to visit at our home for a visit from the church and told me so much about the area and the church. What an amazing life he had. I so hope you and your precious family are well!!
