BONNIE LOWERY TATUM
LUMBERTON — Bonnie Lowery Tatum, 94, of 89 Edgewood Drive, Lumberton, departed her earthly home on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021. She was born to the late Dock Billy Lowery and Stella Dial Lowery on Sept. 23, 1926.
She will join her family in heaven who have preceded her; her parents; her husband, Norman Tatum; a brother, Maurice Lowery Sr.; a sister, Ola Locklear; and a niece, Regina Sampson.
She was a proud second generation graduate of Pembroke State College for Indians, where she followed in her mother's footsteps and obtained a degree in Elementary Education. She served the Public Schools of Robeson County as a teacher for 34 years, from 1948-1982. She was also very dedicated to Mt. Olive Baptist Church and served as the Sunday School secretary for several years. Ms. Bonnie has always been well-known and loved in the community for her willingness to serve in several capacities, show kindness to others, her beautiful quilts, and delicious pound cakes.
Left to cherish her memories and celebrate her legacy here on Earth are her niece, whom she often referred to as her sister or "baby," Yvonne L. Wallace; a great-niece, Kelli Wallace, and her son, Kamden; her nephews, Maurice Lowery Jr. and his son, Nicholas, and Anthony Quinn Lowery (Virginia); a great-niece, Kayla Hunt (Stephen) and their children, Emma and Linkin; a great-nephew, Christopher; Leland Lowery and his son Harland; and a niece, Rosiland Locklear and her children Pernell, Dock and Leah. She is also survived by a multitude of special friends who she loved like family.
Please join the family in honoring Ms. Bonnie on Monday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Lumberton. Pastor Earney Hammonds will officiate. The family will be receiving visitors at the church prior to the funeral from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. and will be followed by the burial in the church cemetery.
The family requests that face coverings and social distancing guidelines are followed for all in attendance.

My wife, our son and I had rented a home across the street from Bonnie and she was so sweet and welcoming to us, especially our son whom she affectionately called "Baby". Enjoyed the time spent with her and Quinn's family. God bless her.

A wonderful lady! I first met Mrs. Bonnie while working at Long Branch School. That’s when I learned to admire her for her humor, kindness, beauty, faith and intelligence! In later years, Laney and I looked forward to visiting with Yvonne and Mrs. Bonnie and received a blessing each visit! We will miss this special lady!
