Johnny Ledbetter Obituary

Johnny Richard Ledbetter, Retired DeKalb Police Captain, age 63 of Conyers, GA slipped away into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father, Friday, March 19, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. "Big John" was born June 18, 1946 on Pecan Street in Clarkston, GA. He was the youngest of three children born to John Frances Ledbetter and Agnes Gaddy. He was raised in the Clarkston area and attended Clarkston High School. He served his Country as an Air Policeman in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Bitburg, Germany. John fulfilled his dream and began his career as a DeKalb County Police Officer in 1968. He was a very successful homicide investigator and was instrumental in helping to establish the K-9 Drug Unit while supervising the Narcotics Squad. He was the youngest officer to attain the rank of Lieutenant. He retired in 1999 after 31 years of service. He enjoyed spending time outside working in the yard and tending the garden. Papa loved being with family and spoiling his five grandbabies. He was an avid fan of Braves baseball, Beatles music, and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. John is survived by the love of his life, his adoring and dedicated wife of 42 years, Joyce (Britt) Ledbetter; daughter, Rhonda (Al) Morelock, Orlando, FL; sons, Christopher (Wendy) Ledbetter, Knoxville, TN, Jeffrey Ledbetter (Alicia Moore), Conyers, John Matthew Ledbetter (Amanda Miller), Conyers; five grandchildren, Kinsey, Trevor, Corey, Cameron Morelock and Christina Ledbetter. I did not have the good fortune to have met Mr. Ledbetter; but feel I know him through his son, Jeff. Now, having just read his wonderful accomplishments and commitment to family, friends, his county and his country - it is no wonder at all that Jeff is as fine a person as he is. There are those that go before us that make us proud to have even heard their name. My deepest sympathy to the Ledbetter family.

My condolences and sympathy to the Ledbetter family. The passing of Captain Ledbetter is a great loss to us all. When ever I came to him with a question or problem, he always seemed to have the right answer. May he rest in peace with our Lord and Saviour.

March 25, 2010

John Ledbetter was one of the most "stand up" supervisors I ever worked with. The lessons he taught me as a young officer have stayed with me to this day. He bowed to no one and stood up for those who needed it. He will be missed. My sympathy to the family that I know he loved.

One of the best officers that I ever worked with.Always dependable and could be counted one whenever needed.

March 24, 2010

Captain Ledbetter was my supervisor in homicide, south precinct and east precinct as well as a neighbor and friend in Conyers, Ga. The police department could always depend on him to be there for the officers and detectives he worked with. He may be gone but I will never forget him. Please accept my condolences in this time of sorrow and know that he is in a better place. God bless.
