Christopher Calhoun Obituary

Christopher Taylor Calhoun, 58, went home to Heaven on Monday, August 15, 2011 following a year battling cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Dempsey Calhoun Sr. and Evelyn Johnson Taylor Calhoun.
Chris spent most of his life devoted to agriculture. He began farming as a child with his family. He joined the US Army in 1972 as a mechanic and paratrooper. He returned home to school and the family farm, obtained his Associate Agriculture Degree and during the next 30 years held various agriculture jobs in the community. Over the years he developed many close relationships with his fellow farmers in the surrounding counties.
We will remember his kindness and generosity, his willingness to help others and his genuine concern for his neighbor. With his cheerful attitude and unfailing optimism, he saw the good in everyone. He was forever performing acts of kindness but never asking for anything in return. He loved people everywhere, and was a good listener. His sense of humor was present until his death.
Chris was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle who loved the Lord and the world He made. He was constantly amazed at the power of God's creation and His love for us.
Chris leaves to cherish his memory the love of his life, Joan Todd Calhoun; son, Dempsey Calhoun (Sheena) of Rocky Mount, daughter, Diana Calhoun of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Brooke Sedler, Taylor Sedler, Colt Calhoun and Curtis Calhoun; and sisters, Deborah Calhoun Whitley, Becky Calhoun Hawley (Jay); brothers, George Calhoun (Audrey), and Kelly Calhoun (Ellen) of Rocky Mount; sister in law, Voloria Peele (Tommy); brother in law, Randy Todd; aunts, Ella Coats, (Russel), Ruby Todd of Rocky Mount and Gladys Shelton of Tarboro; uncle, Cecil Calhoun (Jerry) of Rocky Mount; many nieces and nephews that he enjoyed watching grow up.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 6:00-7:00p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2011 followed by a service to remember his life at 7 pm. at West Edgecombe Baptist Church with Terry Brooks officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the West Edgecombe Baptist Church Building Fund, 13821 NC 43 N, Rocky Mount, NC 27801
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during Chris' illness. The prayers, visits, cards, food, and words of encouragement were greatly appreciated. We wish to also thank the staff of Drs Huffman and Jacimore, and Nash Hospice.
Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC. You may share your memories and condolences with the family by visiting www.wheelerwoodlief.com.

I knew Chris back in the early 70's. He worked at the service station on Old Wilson Rd. Never saw him when he was not smiling, had the cutest laugh. My mama died in 1972,and when hearing of Chris going into the army that sadden me as well.Knew he would be missed then by his family and friends. Chris was a very smart and helpful and likeable person. Raised old school way, nothing better. Prayers go out to all his family and friends.God Bless you all may you be comforted in knowing you will see Chris again,God is Good.
