Richard Carney Obituary

'Dick'
Richard "Dick" Caswell Carney was born November 24, 1939 and departed this life January 30, 2012. Dick served in the US Air Force and law enforcement. After surviving severe burns, he began volunteering with the American Red Cross and opened the first Red Cross Blood Center in Greenville.
He will be most remembered for his enthusiasm for helping others, whether it was storm victims, lost animals or strangers in need. Through his involvement with Peace Presbyterian Church, Dick spearheaded rescue efforts in Haiti, the Gulf Coast and right here at home. Dick's unmatched passion for animals led him to spend numerous hours working with Spay Today, Pitt County Humane Society and the ASPCA. As an elder at Peace Presbyterian Church, Dick energized others with his love for helping others.
Dick is survived by his wife, Kay Carney; sons, Richard Pittman (Susan), Stewart Pittman (Michelle); grandchildren, Karie Pittman, Davis Pittman, Gabbie Pittman, Hannah Pittman, Justin Johnson, Courtney Cyrus, Cody Cyrus, Jonah Downer, Ian Downer, and Ella Downer; sisters, Leigh Boyette (Mitchell Jackson), of Rocky Mount, Rebecca Carney of Mexico; step-children, Vanessa Downer (David) and Brian Cyrus (Tammy); close friends, Joe Liuzza and Eric Sjoerdsma; constant four-legged companion, Maggie and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Caswell Carney and Gladys Daughtry Strickland.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Peace Presbyterian Church, The Red Cross, Pitt County Humane Society, Spay Today or ASPCA.
Services are entrusted to Congleton Memorial Mortuary, Greenville, NC. Online condolences at www.congletonmemorialmortuary.com.

I am deeply saddened at the loss of Mr. Dick. I worked with Mr. Dick many years ago (early 80's) at Brown-Wood. He was one of the sweetest, gentleman that I knew at the time and since. I have thought about him many times over the years and enjoyed reading articles in the paper about him and thought to myself " Mr. Dick at it again!" I can remember back in those days he had a connection with someone that could get him softshell crabs(my all time favorite seafood) and he made a special trip one weekend to get me a box! I often think of that when I am eating softshell crabs. I know your family has lots of GREAT memories and will always CHERISH them! I know I will CHERISH mine!

I remember Dick on a board I served with him...didn't know who he was, but after meeting him, I knew he was true to his "causes". Very good person that I respected and admired. God has a great Angel...

I worked with Dick for over twelve years with Red Cross Blood Services. It was a powerful part of his life. He was truly a one-of-a-kind person. He would try to do almost anything and especially knew how to bring in blood donors! He had a very strong will and determination, a go-getter. I am glad that he became committed to God, his Church and his family. I have not seen Dick for about ten years, but I am sad to know that he will no longer be there if needed. I remember especially Richard and Stuart as young lads and wish them well on life's journey. Clyda Creech, Greensboro, NC
