Richard Howard Obituary

WOODGATE/SAUQUOIT - Richard A. "Dick" Howard Sr., 83, of Woodgate and formerly of Sauquoit, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born on June 13, 1941 in Utica, a son of the late Alton "Red" and Elizabeth (Newell) Howard and graduated the class of 1959 from Sauquoit Valley High School. On November 17, 2023, Dick was united in marriage to Susan E. Hill in Rochester and shared a blessed union shared with mutual love and devotion. Until recently, Dick was the oldest standing member of the Sauquoit Volunteer Fire Dept., serving for 64 years.

Dick thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing for trout and boating on Little Long Lake. He also loved to play cards, especially Pitch and rolling the dice playing Farkle.

Surviving are his wife Sue, Woodgate, and her children, (Dick's step-children), Michele (Joseph) Ferrauilo, Michael Maher, Wendy (Paul) Walzer, and Jennifer (Matthew) Pollock, all of Rochester; Dick's children, Richard A. Howard Jr., OK, Ted (Patricia) Howard, FL, Vicki (Mike) Smith, MS, and Debra (John) Scott, PA; grandchildren, Kristi, Ashley, Brittany, Brooke, Dylan, Austin, Lee, Allison, Jamie, Jackson, Daniella, Penelope, Devin, Megan, Paige, Sally, Nikki, Lee, Cathy, Christopher, Rikki, Syssa, Jessie, Jacob and Tyler; 41 great-grandchildren; sister, Peggy Kot; step-sister, Joyce (Mike) Dubiel, and brother, Ralph (Sharon) Howard. He was predeceased by a grandson, Neil Howard; brother, Donald Howard, and daughter-in-law, Vida Howard.

Dick's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the first responders with Woodgate Volunteer Fire Department and the officers with the New York State Police Troop D Headquarters for all their wonderful care and compassion.

Relatives and friends were invited to visitation on Sunday, February 23, 2025, from 2-4 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St., Sauquoit. Funeral services commenced at the conclusion of visitation.

I had the honor of working alongside Dick Howard at Camp Nazareth for many years. Although I have not seen him in a very long time, I think of him often. He truly was one in a million.

Dick was our neighbor for 40 years. Great guy. If you needed help he was there. World needs more people like Dick. Great crappie fisherman. Word on Little Long Lake was if you wanted to get some crappie you had to go to Dicks freezer. We will miss him.
